Dampe was first introduced inThe Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time, and is one of the franchise’s strangest characters. Dampe is a kind hunchbacked gravedigger who takes care of the graveyards that players visit in the games. He has had six total mainline game appearances beforeEchoes of Wisdom. In the 2019 Switch remake ofLink’s Awakening, Dampe was responsible for the customizable dungeons feature. Dampe makes a return inEchoes of Wisdom, this time as an engineer.
In a new tweet by Nintendo, it is revealed how in Zelda’s latest adventure, Dampe will take on the role of an engineer that can craft various Automatons that Zelda can use. Each Automaton can be used by winding them up, which will give a unique effect when activated. Much likeDampe’s past appearances in theZeldafranchise, he is a kind-hearted man who wishes to help the hero save the day, having great pride in his creations.
Dampe is an Automaton Engineer in Zelda: Echoes of Wisdom
Dampe was previously revealed inEchoes of Wisdom’s Still World trailer, with the trailer also detailing how Automatons worked. Dampe can build these Automatons based on the monsters wandering the world. After Zelda activates one by winding up the key on its back, it can unleash a variety of effects, such as it rocketing high into the sky, sending out waves of music notes that can attack enemies, or firing cannonballs in a straight line. Unlike the Echoes Zelda can summon, the Automatons can break down if they take too much damage.
Other NPCs that players can meet inEchoes of Wisdominclude the Queen of Gerudo, a Goron obsessed with fireworks, and a Great Fairy, among other familiar faces. Zelda can even don a sword herself, usingEchoes of Wisdom’s Swordfighter form, making her play like Link with his traditional sword-and-shield gameplay. Zelda has a variety of tools she can use in her journey to save Hyrule, and players can experiment with them all whenEchoes of Wisdomreleases on September 26.
