Summary
At this point, it’s safe to say that Sony’s strategy regarding its rights over some Marvel characters hasn’t worked out the way the company hoped. Despite that, it is going back to the well one more time withVenom: The Last Dance. The third movie in the Venom trilogy certainly makes sense for Sony’s last swing at the pinata, considering the trilogy centered around Tom Hardy as Eddie Brock, and his symbiote is easily the most popular of any of the entries in Sony’s version of the MCU.
From the latest trailer forVenom: The Last Dance, it’s clear Sony’s final swing is a big one. Interestingly enough it appears that it’s actuallyexpanding theVenommythologywhen most studios would be focusing on shrinking it a bit and not introducing new aspects but tying up loose ends. After having the first two films be relatively self-contained movies that featured the character’s origin story and then a fight against one of its greatest enemies, the third installmentappears far grander in scale. The prevailing question about this approach is whether it’s too little, too late, or whether this one might finally lead to a homerun.
Can Venom 3’s Lore Dive Please Marvel Fans?
With box office and critical disasterslikeMadame WebandMorbius, it’s understandable for fans to wonder whether the apparent approach of Venom 3 of going more into the lore behind the symbiote is a worthy approach. On the other hand, the average movie goer might not know anything about the backstory of this rather interesting alien creature. While the symbiote has been unveiled in the originalSpidermanmovies and theVenomfranchise, it’s always been a mystery why exactly its on earth and where it came from. A few lines here and there have tried to paint a backstory in the Tom Hardy flicks but there was more ground to be tread.
Venom: The Last Dancefans have long known there was going to be a deeper diveinto the lore of the symbiotesbut the latest trailer shows it could be a very deep dive. In fact, at one point in the video, Sony makes no attempt to hide that Knull, the symbiote god is coming. Setting aside the fact that revealing far too much in trailers and teasers has become a trend that is among the most annoying in the movie and television world, it makes sense why the company wants to verify people know Knull is included inVenom 3. It’s a last ditch effort to really get comic book fans to the theater.
Is The Arrival Of Knull Enough?
For those who are not deeply into the Spider-Man and lore behind the Venom character, theidea of a symbiote king(or god) is attractive enough to drive some interest. It’s a promise in the trailer that there will be at least a few lines about where these aliens come from and why they’re on earth. If Sony goes into the lore enough, it could even explain how the symbiotes exist at all.
If Sony goes into the lore enough, it could even explain how the symbiotes exist at all.
For those who have followed the many, many comic book stories thatinvolve Venom and Knull, this is an exciting development because it involved the introduction of a “big bad” that should the writers do him right, has the power to upend an entire cinematic universe. The kind of power he brings is one that should be a real fight for the symbiote and not just a fight for Eddie Brock the way Carnage was inVenom 2. On the other hand, Knull is also the kind of powerful that it doesn’t make a ton of sense that if he is indeed coming to earth, Eddie and the Symbiote would be able to defeat him. Especially in a cinematic universe where Venom is the only one fighting him.
An Overpowered Villain Easily Defeated Could Backfire
Perhaps Sony’s biggest risk in introducing a character with raw power onpar with the MCU’s Thanosis that Knull will have to be severely underpowered for Venom to win any fight. Or, the symbiote god may not be coming to earth at all. It’s possible the scenes shown off in the latestVenom: The Last Dancetrailer where the hero is fighting a kind of animalistic symbiote is the big enemy. Or at least that’s the level of enemy audiences will see.
There have been rumors that Venom 3 will tie into Spider-Man 4
If theintroduction of Knullis a misdirect, if it’s a mention of the creator of the symbiotes as a way to only shade in more of the backstory, while being defeated because Venom dispatches his avatars that came to earth, Sony could end up receiving the opposite effect. That approach could end upturning people away fromVenom 3because it would mean promises not delivered, yet again. The big swing could lead to a strikeout and the end of any hopes by Sony that they’ll get a legitimate hit out of its Marvel license.
