Summary

Khaos Reigns is set to provide a significant expansion toMortal Kombat 1, but it may not be the only big event in the game’s future.Mortal Kombat 1not only provided another installment of the hit fighting franchise, it also rebooted its timeline once more, putting extra pressure on it to succeed. With Khaos Reigns bringing the count of DLC fighters to 10, the game has already significantly grown in the year since its release. There is reason to believe that the game isn’t done growing, and Khaos Reigns could only be the latest stage ofMortal Kombat 1’s development.

The upcomingKhaos Reigns DLC forMortal Kombat 1is going to be an expansion reminiscent ofMortal Kombat 11’s Aftermath. In addition to bringing a new story for the DLC, it’s also bringing six new DLC fighters to the game, including:

The DLC has a definite theme for both sides of its roster. TheMortal Kombatoriginals are all Lin Kuei ninjas, while the guest fighters are all film icons, albeit from three different genres. Following up on Kombat Pack 1, Khaos Reigns looks to be another notable expansion forMortal Kombat 1, though there is a good chance more big content drops will follow.

Mortal Kombat 1 Can Still Grow Far Beyond Chaos Reigns

Mortal Kombat 1 Could Surpass Mortal Kombat 11’s Support

Prior to the game’s release, Ed Boon implied thatMortal Kombat 1’s post-launch supportcould be the longest in the series. For context,Mortal Kombat 11had recieved a healthy amount of content after release, with multiple waves of DLC fighters in addition to the Aftermath campaign. The amount of content inMortal Kombat 11was comfortably able to keep it popular in the five years until the next installment came around. IfMortal Kombat 1is to match or exceed that, then Khaos Reigns will not be the end of its support.Mortal Kombat 1has yet to meet the bar set by its predecessor.

Many Key Characters Still Have Not Entered Mortal Kombat 1

It should be pointed out that there are still severalMortal Kombatfighters missing as of Khaos Reigns. This includes series mainstays such as Jax and Sonya, who were a surprise to not see in the base roster.Mortal Kombathas several games worth of characters that have yet to be added toMortal Kombat 1, and in many cases haven’t even been sighted in the new timeline yet. That means that even discounting guest characters, there are plenty of potential options for future expansions.Mortal Kombat 1’s roster has ample opportunity to grow with further updates to the game.

Mortal Kombat 1 Could Still Grow in Several Directions Through Expansions

Further expansions could also be used to explore more ofMortal Kombat 1’s timeline. There have already been manylore changes inMortal Kombat 1, and it would be interesting to see if any other characters or factions have been through significant changes in Liu Kang’s new world. In addition to fleshing them out with new campaigns, the expansions could also bring new modes to play as well. New ways to play would be another way to extend the game’s shelf life in addition to adding new characters.Mortal Kombat 1has already experimented plenty, and it doesn’t have to stop yet.

Mortal Kombat 11did incredibly well, and surpassing it should be a goal forMortal Kombat 1and its developers. While the prospect ofupcoming fighters inMortal Kombat 1is naturally exciting, future expansions can add even more. Fighters, stories, and game modes are all on the table when it comes to what could be added toMortal Kombat 1, and each would do wonders for the game’s longevity. IfMortal Kombat 1is going to last, then Khaos Reigns probably won’t be the end of its updates.
