Summary

Despite the popularHarry Pottersport of Quidditch missing from Avalanche Software’sHogwarts Legacy, Unbroken Studios’Harry Potter: Quidditch Championsis here, offering players the chance to experience the game firsthand in either solo or competitive multiplayer play. During their time inQuidditch Champions, players are given the opportunity to see what it’s like to mount a broomstick and participate in one of the most popular sports ever imagined in a book series.

Quidditch Championsmight maintain many ofQuidditch’s rulesestablished by theHarry Potterbook series, but it has drastically changed one of its most iconic rules involving the Golden Snitch. Specifically, rather than allowing the team whose Seeker catches the Golden Snitch first to instantly win the game with 150 points,Quidditch Championsonly grants that team 30 points. To be fair, 30 points is quite a bit in the grand scheme of things, but it’s still a far cry from the 150 points it rewards a team in an actual Quidditch match. Even so, the change is for the best, considering how unbalanced everyQuidditch Championsmatch would be if the game followed traditional rules.

Quidditch Champions' Golden Snitch Change Is Ultimately for the Best

Quidditch Champions' Golden Snitch Nerf Prevents Matches From Ending Too Quickly

The most obvious differencenerfing the Golden Snitch inQuidditch Championsmakes to the game is that it prevents matches from ending too quickly. If catching the Golden Snitch allowed Seekers to score 150 points for their team, as it does in the books,Quidditch Championsmight not even be worth playing because each match wouldn’t last very long at all. Currently,Quidditch Championsmatches can last anywhere from 15 to 20 minutes, so any shorter wouldn’t be very fulfilling.

Rather than allowing the team whose Seeker catches the Golden Snitch first to instantly win the game with 150 points,Quidditch Championsonly grants that team 30 points.

Quidditch Champions' Nerfed Golden Snitch Prevents the Seeker From Being Too Important

Another thing worth noting about the nerfQuidditch Championshas made to the Golden Snitch is that a traditional Golden Snitch would make the Seeker’s role in the game far too important. If Golden Snitches were worth 150 points as they are in theHarry Potterbook series, matches inQuidditch Championswould revolve around each team aggressively attacking the other team’s Seeker while simultaneously aggressively defending their own.

This would inadvertently delegitimize the Beater, Keeper, and Chaser roles, categorizing them as far less valuable and therefore not worth playing.

Nerfing the Golden Snitch in Quidditch Champions Prevents Unbalanced Queues

Quidditch Champions' Golden Snitch nerf also prevents queues from becoming unbalanced. In other words, if catching a Golden Snitch netted a team 150 points, more players might wish to play as a Seeker rather than any of the otherpositions inQuidditch Champions, thereby bogging down queues and lengthening matchmaking times. After all, it feels good to be the hero on the team, and the Seeker being such a valuable role would make anyone filling it a hero. Fortunately, every role has its place inQuidditch Champions, thanks to the Golden Snitch only giving the team who catches it 30 points.

Despite making a big change to a sport firmly established in one of the most beloved book series ever written,Quidditch Championsmade the right move with the Golden Snitch. Ultimately, this change balancesQuidditch Champions' gameplayby lengthening each match, preventing the Seeker position from being far too important, and avoiding unbalanced queues and long matchmaking times. HardcoreHarry Potterfans might not find this change to be a welcome one, but it’s good for what the game is, especially when it comes to its multiplayer aspects.
