The first story expansion ofMortal Kombat 1, Khaos Reigns, will be released by the end of September and with it a lot of new content will be introduced. Taking place after the ending ofMortal Kombat 1’s base campaign, Khaos Reigns sees God of Fire Liu Kang rally his allies once more to defend their timeline from being thrust into chaos by Havik and his army. Here, multiple new fighters will be added to the game, includingScream’s Ghostface, Arnold Schwarzenegger’s Conan the Barbarian, andTerminator 2: Judgment Day’s T-1000. On top of those, three classic fighters will return toMortal Kombat 1, including Noob Saibot, and reimaginings of the cybernetic duo Cyrax and Sektor.

Cyrax and Sektor’s Mortal Kombat History

Cyrax and Sektor first debuted in the arcade gameMortal Kombat 3in 1995 alongside another cyborg version of Smoke. All three of these characters were members ofthe Lin Kuei clan of assassinsbefore they were cyberized as a part of the Cyber Initiative. The Lin Kuei’s Grandmaster believed that becoming cyberized could make the ninjas more efficient in their duties and often forced many of the Lin Kuei to become cyberized whether they wanted to or not. Sektor, the son of the Grandmaster, volunteered to be the first to be cyberized and become the red cyborg designated as LK-9T9. Eventually, Sektor killed his father and assumed control of the Lin Kuei.

Alongside Sektor, one of the first Lin Kuei to be cyberized was Cyrax. However, unlike Sektor,Cyrax often had reservations about the Cyber Initiativeand being cyberized. In 2011’sMortal Kombat, Cyrax is even depicted in his human Lin Kuei form fighting against the human Sektor in opposition to being cyberized. Despite this conflict, Cyrax is often forced to be cyberized into a yellow cyborg designated as LK-4D4 in multiple timelines. Once cyberized, Cyrax is usually sent to hunt down runaway Lin Kuei opposing the initiative, such as Kuai Liang Sub-Zero.

Mortal Kombat 1’s Cyrax and Sektor Explained

SinceMortal Kombat 1is in a new timeline created by Titan Liu Kang, several classic characters have been reimagined, such as Kuai Liang being Scorpion or Baraka being a diseased Edenian instead of a demon. Cyrax and Sektor were not immune from these changes as both were gender-swapped to be female in the new timeline. Additionally,Cyrax and Sektor are no longer turned into cyborgsfrom the previous two timelines and instead utilize power armor to use their classic mechanized weapons. This new armor currently has no name, but it appears that Bi-Han Sub-Zero is leading the new initiative as he is seen ordering around the cybernetic duo in Cyrax’s gameplay trailer.

Despite not being cyberized, Cyrax still has qualms with her Lin Kuei leaders; she is shown confronting Bi-Han about calling off their attack on Kuai Liang Scorpion’s wedding to Harumi Shirai. Meanwhile, Sektor remains set in her ways as a ruthless assassin, even hinting at the armor being a step towards full cyberization in an intro dialogue sequence with Cyrax. A bit of Sektor has changed, however, as in an intro dialogue sequence with Scorpion, it’s revealed thatMadam Bo is Sektor’s mother. Sektor’s mother and father are never named in past timelines, but Madam Bo is suspected to be a gender-swapped version of Bo' Rai Cho, the man who trained Liu Kang and Kung Lao in prior timelines.

Cyrax and Sektor’s Potential Fates

Given Cyrax’s reservations about attacking Scorpion’s wedding, the Lin Kuei armor, and Bi-Han’s direction for the clan, as well as Cyrax’s previous qualms with the Cyber Initiative,Cyrax will probably rebel against the Lin Kueiand join Scorpion’s newly made Shirai Ryu clan. Meanwhile, if Sektor survives Khaos Reigns, Sektor could upgrade the power armor into a new form of cyberization forMortal Kombat 2. Additionally, if Bi-Han Sub-Zero dies even after being corrupted by Havik, Sektor could possibly revive Bi-Han as a cyber Lin Kuei version of Noob Saibot. All of these possibilities could continueMortal Kombat 1’s timeline’s trend of bringing back old characters but with a unique lore twist.

While the classic versions of Cyrax and Sektor are not playable inMortal Kombat 1, both of them can be used as supportive kameos in multiplayer matches.
