Even thoughThe Last of Us Part 2was released just a month before it,Ghost of Tsushimamanaged to be both a critical and commercial hit upon its July 2020 launch. Sucker Punch’s fastest-selling game in the US and the 7th best-selling game of 2020,Ghost of Tsushimaperformed very well during its first year, and that success only continued with the launch ofGhost of Tsushima’s Director’s Cutin August 2021.
Now, four years after its initial launch,Ghost of Tsushimais generally viewed as one of PlayStation’s strongest IPs, and it feels as though Sucker Punch and Sony are only just getting started. Though a sequel hasn’t been officially confirmed yet,Ghost of Tsushima 2feels like an inevitability at this point. That feeling grows stronger every timeGhost of Tsushimamakes headlines, and that’s becoming a more frequent occurrence, as twoGhost of Tsushimaspinoff projects are currently in the works.
Ghost of Tsushima’s Future Is Looking Bright
Ghost of Tsushima Is Getting a Live-Action Adaptation
Back in March 2021 – less than a year after the game’s launch – aGhost of Tsushimalive-action movie adaptation was confirmed to be in development by Sony Pictures and PlayStation Productions. It was also announced that Chad Stahelski – the primary director oftheJohn Wickfranchiseand a prolific stunt performer – would be directing and producing theGhost of Tsushimalive-action movie.
Official details on theGhost of Tsushimalive-action adaptation have been few and far between over the last three years, though there have been a few leaks and rumors surrounding the project. The most recent rumor hit the internet back in June of this year, claiming thatShogun’s Hiroyuki Sanada could be joining theGhost of Tsushimamovie’s cast, likely as protagonist Jin Sakai’s uncle. TheGhost of Tsushimalive-action adaptation doesn’t currently have a release window.
Ghost of Tsushima Is Getting an Animated Adaptation
But beforeGhost of Tsushimaheads to the realm of big-budget live-action adaptations, it’s set to receive something akin to an animated spinoff with the upcomingSecret Level. Created byLove, Death + Robots' Blur Studio,Secret Levelwas announced a few weeks ago during Gamescom Opening Night Live.Secret Levelis an Amazon Prime streaming show that contains 15 animated, standalone short stories, each one centered around a different video game, such asMega Man,Armored Core,Sifu, andNew World: Aeternum.
It’s been confirmed thatGhost of Tsushima’s Jin Sakaiwill appear in one ofSecret Level’s 15 episodes, though the exact details of the episode’s content are currently unknown. Based on the character’s brief appearance in the reveal trailer, it seems likely that Jin Sakai won’t feature in his own standalone episode focused onGhost of Tsushima, but instead appear alongside other confirmed PlayStation mascots likeGod of War’s Kratos in some kind of franchise-merging plot.
Ghost of Tsushima 2 Feels Inevitable
If its sales numbers weren’t enough of an indication thatGhost of Tsushimais only getting started, then its two upcoming adaptations should be more than enough evidence. It seems as though Sony has a great deal of confidence in theGhost of Tsushimabrand, and with that in mind, it seems extremely unlikely thataGhost of Tsushima 2isn’t currently in development at Sucker Punch. But fans will probably need to keep holding their breath for a little longer.
