In 2013, horror fans learned that there would be aTrick ‘r Treatsequel. According toEntertainment Weekly, director Michael Dougherty shared the good news at Beyond Fest 2013. Why Is The Trick R Treat Sequel Delayed?

Is there a reason whyTrick ‘r Treat 2has been delayed? While those who love spooky stories can check out some fun ’80s horror movies during the Halloween season, everyone would enjoy the chance to dive into the world of Sam once again. According toBloody Disgusting, Dougherty said the movie was “in very active development” at Beyond Fest in 2022. Then, in October 2023, according toCollider,Dougherty talked about the “timing” of the sequel and while there is no official update, it sounds likeTrick ‘r Treat 2is still happening. He said:

“I’m hoping to talk to Legendary. They’ve been wonderful, like great collaborators. But so much of it is timing, and as you know, we just got out of a strike, so the next step, fingers crossed, would be looking at budget, of course, schedule, and all the rest.”

The director continued:

“we have a really, really great script for a sequel. And I brought in my co-writer fromKrampusto do it with me. So Zach Shields and Todd Casey who doKrampuswith me also helped me writeTrick ‘r Treat Part 2.”

While fans would love to know a filming update forTrick ‘r Treat 2along with an official release date, it sounds like it will take a while for that to happen. As Dougherty explained, the 2023 WGA/SAG-AFTRA strike appears to be one reason why the movie is still “in very active development” but there are no further updates at this time.

While filming delays are of course common in the entertainment industry, it can be tough for horror fans to wait for sequels since they are so passionate about this genre. At least audiences will get treated tothe upcomingFinal DestinationsequelandScream 7, which stars Neve Campbell again, in the next few years.HopefullyTrick ‘r Treat 2will get more updates soonand fans won’t have to wait several more years to learn more news about it.

What Could Trick ‘r Treat 2 Be About?

Fromthe rules of Halloweento the tragic story of a bus crash that happened a long time ago, there are many reasons why horror fans can’t get enough ofTrick ‘r Treat. In his 2013 interview withEntertainment Weekly, director Michael Dougherty talked about story ideas for the sequel. He said something that all horror fans will relate to:

“I’m a firm believer that October should be filled with Halloween movies, or horror movies. That’s something I remember from childhood.”

As he explained, people are always excited about wachingslashers during the month of HalloweenandTrick ‘r Treatstands out since it doesn’t follow the formula of a killer chasing teenagers going to a party on October 31st. Instead, each of the four main storylines follows characters of different ages in different situations, and that is what makes it so fun. SinceTrick ‘r Treatis an anthology about various Halloween-themed tales, a sequel would likely follow that tradition. In hisEWinterview, Dougherty continued that he wanted to start aTrick ‘r Treatfranchise that focuses on the horror villain Sam. He said:

“Well we could probably do aTrick ‘r Treatmovie every year or every other year, and that it would sort of just be a new batch of stories and characters. And the common link between all of them would be Sam.”

AlthoughDougherty hasn’t shared plot details more recently than this 2013 interview, it would make sense for Sam to appear in the sequel. Since he makes sure that Halloween runs according to his horrifying and eerie plans, he is a big and important part of this particular world, and fans would miss him. There will also hopefully be great characters like Emma (Leslie Bibb) who hates Halloween and says ahilarious quote at the beginning of the movie.
