The Ten Great Families are an integral part of the Tower and its politics as they make up the ruling class. They are recognized as nobles and stand right behind Zahard, the ruler of the Tower, in the hierarchy, as their family heads are some of the first people to ascend the treacherous floors of the Tower.
Each of the Ten Great Familiespossesses immense power, wealth, and influence which have and continue to shape the political and social structure of the Tower for millennia. In Zahard’s absence, their family heads make up the council of Regents that oversee the activities in the Tower, and in his presence, they are some of his most trusted friends and advisors.
The Relationship Between Zahard And The Heads Of The Ten Great Families
The Ruling Class Of The Tower
Zahard and Twelve Great Warriors suddenly found themselves on the first floor of the Tower, with no explanation as to how they got there. They werethe first set of Irregulars,although they are not referred to as that anymore due to being major figures in the Tower’s history. After their ascension to the 134th Floor, Zahard decided to stop progressing, which made two of his companions fall out with him and the rest of their group. As such, only the Ten Great Warriors who joined Zahard when he declared himself King of the Tower were etched into the annals of history.
Zahard and these Ten Great Warriors made a pact with a Guardian to receive immortality, putting them in a position to rule the Tower for all eternity. These Great Warriors went on to sire children which make up the Great Families. According to SIU, the author of the manhwa, Khun Eduan is inspired by Dionysus, and Yeon by the virgin goddess of hearth Hestia, so it is possible thatthe pantheon of Greek Olympianswere an inspiration for Zahard and the Ten Families. Daughters of these families are selected every few hundred years to compete against each other to earn the title of Zahard Princess and join his family as a bride, as part of a program devised by Po Bidau Gustang.
Those chosen are given the gift of Zahard’s blood and also receive immense power and authority, and even greater influence amongst the other residents of the Tower. While the Ten Families are allied with Zahard’s Empire, they have no obligations to assist Zahard, with only the Lo Po Bia Family notably sending troops in his time of need. This might explain why Zahard and Lo Po Bia Traumereishare a thicker bond thanthe rest of the family heads.
The Great Families Are Deadlocked With Each Other In Terms Of Power
A Collection Of Some Of The Most Powerful Characters
The Ten Great Warriors–Arie Hon, Khun Eduan, Ha Yurin, Tu Perie Tperie, Eurasia Blossom, Po Bidau Gustang, Yeon Yirang, Ari Han, Lo Po Bia Traumerei, Hendo Lok Blodmadder– are relative to themselves in terms of strength, but the same cannot be said of their families. The Arie, Khun, and Ha Families are the strongest, but the family heads bring some sort of balance. As such, they resort to using underhanded tactics like the violence-filledcompetition between Zahard Princessesto eliminate female powerhouses from rival families.
In anticipation of the upcoming war against the Po Bidau Family, Lo Po Bia Traumerei and Zahard attempted to woo Baam over to their side as it is said that he has the potential to become as powerful as a family head. A move that would see them rise above all the other families in power.
The DIfferent Families And Their Notable Characteristics
Each Family Has Distinct Features
The Arie Family, led by Arie Hon is the strongest and most influential family in the Tower. Renowned for their swordsmanship, they have claimed the biggest territory amongst the Ten Great Families with their might. Khun Eduan has the most number of wives, and by extension, the most number of branch families. Due to the number of children in the family, they host official fights yearly, in which the winners are highly exalted and the losers are neglected. Spear bearing,striking intelligence, lightning, and ice affinity are some of the notable characteristics of the Khun Family. The Ha Family is renowned for physical strength and martial arts, led by Ha Yurin, their matriarch.
The Tu Perie Family’s specialty lies in information gathering as their leader Tu Perie Tperie is the best Light Bearer in the Tower’s history. The Eurasia family is well known for their affinity for Shinsu manipulation, and for producing one of the strongest Zahard Princesses to date, Eurasia Enne Zahard whose downfall was responsible for the friction between the Eurasia and Po Bidau Families. The Po Bidau Family’s specialty lies in research and intelligence, but they are also great at manipulating Shinsu.
For reasons known to Po Bidau Gustang, they turned their back on the Zahard Empire and have been in open warfare with the Lo Po Bia Family ever since. The Ari Family is quite the oppositeand well known for their pacifismand ability to use needles (a sword-like weapon type for thrusting attacks). The Yeon Family are not descendants of Yeon Yirang, but of her relative Yeon Llarde, as their matriarch had decided to stay a virgin. They hold a selection every five years for men who wish to bed Yeon Llarde and those selected to bear children with Llarde are accepted into the family once the child is born.
The Lo Po Bia Family are the closest with the Zahard Empire and are known for their Anima. Hendo Lok Blodmadder’s Family suffers from a short lifespan due to the pact he made with the Guardian in exchange for eternal life, as a result, he decided to bear as many children as possible. The family is still the weakest as they have the leastnumber of Rankers, and themost powerful of his children are adopted. Their Shinsu resistance is top notch and their ability to defend against attacks is unrivaled in the Tower.
