Summary
In the 12th episode ofTower of God, Khun Aguero Agnes has a lot thrown at him. After being trapped in the rubble in Xiaxia’s destruction of the Hand of Arlen, he is found along with Viole’s Pocket, while Viole had to abandon everything and go with the FUG operative, Cassano, and an injured (or dead?) Ilmar.
Team Sweet and Sour happen upon Khun, take him back to their place and nurse him back to health, but his problems have only just started as the team he spent years building fell apart in a single night. Hwaryun, the guide and FUG agent, appears and tells him the truth about Viole, adding that his best chance of finding him is to take his team to the Workshop Battle and win.
Aftermath of the Demolition of the Hand of Arlen
“Switching Sides”
As it turns out, two of Khun’s teammates were FUG agents the whole time. Taking advantage of the absence of the strongest individuals on the team (who’d been sent on a suicide mission to take down The Devil of the Right Arm, whom they’d expected to ice Khuns Ran and Aguero, as well as Novick), Michael and Apple subdued Dan and murdered Gyetang, before Rachel came out of her room and asked to join them.
She tried getting Dan to come with them, but when he scoffed at her, she stabbed him within an inch of his life, ensuring that he’d never be able to use his legs; the one thing he had pride in, ever again. After nursing Khun back to health, Ja Wangnan and the others try to get information about Viole and Ilmar, but he doesn’t have much to say about what happened. Breaking news about the incident that took place atthe Hand of Arlenreported that Khun Aguero Agnes died at the scene. Khun and Team Sweet and Sour head back to his base of operations, where they discover the gruesome scene left by Rachel and FUG.
When Dan comes to, Khun apologizes to him for forcing him to join his team, but Dan doesn’t resent him at all. Dan realizes that Rachel chose not to kill him so that he could experience despair, and completely suffer the loss of his legs. Resolving not to give her the satisfaction, Dan asks that Khun take him to the Workshop Battle and climb the Tower, with a glint in his eyes that hadn’t been there before. He talks the reason why he’d refused to join any teams for a long time, which was because his previous team had been completely annihilated during a Test.
He only survived because of his speed, but his cowardice made him ashamed of the one ability he had. While he tries to figure out the situation, and also recognizes Viole’s Pocket as the very one that Bam got from Yuri Jahad when he first entered the Tower, Hwaryun appears, revealing that she is a Guide. In addition, she reveals the fact that Viole is the Twenty-Fifth-Bam, as Khun had suspected based on the message he sawfrom the chatbot, EMILE. Hwaryun tells Khun that if he wants to know about Bam and FUG, he must win the Workshop Battle with Ja Wangnan and his team.
What About Novick and Khun Ran?
Viole is Forced to Lie to Protect Others… Again
In the previous episode, before Xia Xia’s demolition of Arlen, Viole pretended to be a villain again, just as he did while talking to Khun Aguero. Despite the precarity of his circumstances, being forced into a team chosen specifically by agents of FUG, Viole can’t act out of turn or even tell his best friend that he’s still alive – because now the number of hostages has doubled. His friends from over 6 years prior, and the members of Team Sweet and Sour (especially Ilmar) are held hostage without their knowledge so that Viole does whatever FUG requires of him. There’s obviously no honour in this tactic, not to mention the fact that Viole had mostly been doing as he was told and yet they still tried to carry out a hit on Aguero. Khun Ran and Novick have very little idea of the tragedy that befell their teammates in their absence, and when Ran tries to fight Cassano, Viole quickly interferes, surprising Novick by using his signature technique to separate Ran and Cassano.
Forced to choose between death, orjoining their Workshop Battle team, Ran chooses the latter, making for an interesting development as the switching of sides is relevant to both the Khuns in Aguero’s team. Once again, Tower of God’s story does the heaviest of the lifting, piquing interest with its expanding and deepening plot, but the animation quality curtails any further enjoyment beyond its story. Another positive to this episode was the cameo appearance of Shibisu and his team, and even Rak makes an appearance, refusing to believe that Khun Aguero Agnes is dead.
