WhileMortal Kombat 1had an admittedly rocky release, through steady developer support, balance changes andsome incredible DLC characters, the game has found itself in a great place. The recent launch trailer forKhaos Reignshas promised some exciting new changes and features for fans to enjoy, and one would hope thatMK1will continue going from strength to strength, in both its story mode and the overall content available. These arethe standout details we noticed in theMotral Kombat 1: Khaos Reignslaunch trailerthat seem to suggest this will be the case.
5Some Cool New Skins
Nostalgic Skins For Some Fan Favorites
Mortal Kombatas a series has always had iconic designs and costumes for nearly every iteration of the franchise; particularly when it comes to the ninjas. The Invasions game mode has also broughttons of solid skinsto the forefront every season.Khaos Reignsis set to launch with a ton of new classic skins that look incredible.
Mileena’s new empress skin surely takes the limelight as one of the best new skins NetherRealm studios has made, but coupled with it is the iconicUMK3skin for fan favorite Noob Saibot, as well as two cool new skins for Scorpion and Sub-Zero. Overall, the upcoming skins are all great, and complement their respective characters really well. Special mention goes to the new Scorpion skin which, while being a bit plain and understated, looks really clean and fits in with the character’s ending.
4Towers Of Time
The Return Of A Well-Received Single-Player Game Mode
One of the biggest criticisms ofMK1,and a valid criticism at that, was the lack of single-player content. When compared to other games in the genre,MK1does have a respectable lineup of different game modes for players to sink their teeth into, but when compared to previousMortal Kombatgames, the latest game was a bit lacking, especially with the removal of the Krypt.
The new launch trailer forMortal Kombat 1: Khaos Reignshas given players a brief look at the newTowers of Timemode. Also present inMK11,it acted as a constantly rotating game mode wherein players could fight through different towers with different objectives, modifiers, opponents, and rewards. One would expectKhaos Reigns’iteration would be similar. With thesteady improvements to Invasions modesinceMK1’srelease, and this new game mode, players will be happy to finally have some comprehensive single-player options outside the campaign.
3Mileena And Outworld Are Still Involved In The Story
The Outworld Empress May Have Some Plot Relevance
WhileMileenahas only been featured in the pre-release material forKhaos Reigns, there are some interesting little snippets in the recent launch trailer for players to speculate on. Firstly, the trailer features Mileena receiving the Earthrealm protagonists in her throne room when Havik ambushes them.
What’s more interesting is that the trailer features two of Mileena’s retainers, Rain and Khameleon, fighting in unity with Earthrealm’s warriors against Havik and his forces. While we don’t know how heavily the expansion will or will not feature Mileena, it would be interesting to see if her role as Emperess of Outworld is expanded upon, and whether her loyalties are tested by Havik at all.
2The Dynamic Between Sub-Zero And The Cyber Ninjas
A New Look For The Lin Kuei
TheCyber Lin KueiInitiativehas always been a big part of theMortal Kombatuniverse, and the time has come for Liu Kang’s new era to deal with them. While Cyrax and Sektor aren’t shown to be fully robotic (yet), this new trailer and previous pre-release material have shed some light on the new Lin Kuei hierarchy.
Sektor and Cyrax are both still allies of Bi-Han, with the former being extremely loyal to the Grandmaster. Moreover, there are some snippets of tension between the red and yellow ninjas; dialogue about them sorting their issues out after the Havik problem is dealt with. The new trailer also shows Noob Saibot briefly. With Bi-Han likely to bea key character in the new expansion, how his two former subordinates react to his drastic changes will be an exciting part of the story to play through.
1Ghostface Looks Incredible
One Of The Best Guest Fatalities Ever
The biggest takeaway from the launch trailer has to be theGhostfacereveal. Not only does the campy horror icon look incredible visually, he has one of the coolest and most creative fatalities out there. The new Ghostface fatality features two of him, as was the case in the classic movie and some of its sequels, and features some exceptional, and of course brutal, cinematography.
From this tiny reveal, it’s clear that NetherRealm Studios truly understand the character, and players should be excited for his Brutalities, Fatal Blow, intro dialogues and, of course, his gameplay. This should also build anticipation forthe other two guest characters, Conan the Barbarian and the Terminator.
