The Simsis one of the definitive titles in the life sim genre. Since 2000, the EA series has allowed players to build an alternate life. That’s fun enough, but one surprising aspect ofThe Simsfranchise is that there is an unexpected amount of lore buried within the series. Now thatThe Sims 4is getting a brand-new expansion, questions have been arising about the lore of one character in particular.
The newest expansion to come toThe Sims 4is calledLife and Death. Much oftheLife and Deathexpansionis a mystery, but this hasn’t stopped players from speculating whether they can woo-hoo the Grim Reaper or not. The Grim Reaper has been a major fixture inThe Simsfranchise since its genesis, and being able to get extra cozy with the bony harbinger of death would definitely be on-brand for the games. However, this impending expansion raises more questions about an even bigger mystery in the lore ofThe Sims: Olive Specter.
Olive Specter Remains One of The Sims' Most Mysterious NPCs
A Character With Potentially Dark Secrets
Introduced inThe Sims 2, Olive Specter has been a major inspiration for theories within the franchise’s community. The prevailingtheory about Olive Specteris that she is a serial killer. In her backyard, there are a whopping 19 tombstones decorating the premises. Not only that, but ghosts regularly haunt her home at night. That isn’t even the worst of it, though. Olive has a romantic relationship with the Grim Reaper. Although love knows no bounds, Olive’s relationship with the Grim Reaper has only fueled the flames of the serial killer theory. Players have proposed that Olive murders other NPCs to get time alone with death incarnate.
As theLife and Deathexpansion’s release date looms in the distance, it asks whether light will be shed on Olive Specter’s secrets or not. This is unlikely, but it would be disappointing to see such a fun mystery never get solved. At the moment, players are at least able toform a romantic relationship with the Grim Reaperthemselves. That can be fun enough on its own, butThe Sims 4not taking a chance to finally reveal the true nature of Olive’s relationship with the Grim Reaper would be a major disappointment.
TheLife and Deathexpansion launches on October 31.
Through the years,The Simshas had its share of interesting NPCs, but Olive Specter is definitely one of the most compelling. Someone who is in love with the Grim Reaper but can only see them when death occurs is a fascinating concept. It is also just a great showcase of how outlandish the lore ofThe Simscan actually be. On the surface,The Simsseems like a way to build dream houses and have alternate lives, but it can go much deeper.
The Life and Death Expansion Arrives After Another Big Content Upgrade
Life and Deathisn’t the only big update to make its way intoThe Sims 4this year. The expansion followshot on the heels ofLovestruck, which was a game-changer for in-game romances. BetweenLovestruckandLife and Death, it will be exciting to see how both expansions play into the lore ofThe Simswhen paired together.
After an entire decade since its launch,The Sims 4is finally getting some long-requested improvements. Only time will tell if theLife and Deathexpansion paves the way for players to finally woohoo the Grim Reaper. It will be a hilarious turn of events if that’s the case, but potentially never getting closure about Olive Specter will sting.
