Summary

BioWare is well known for its assortment of RPGs it has made over the years, ever since the company was founded in 1995. While players may know BioWare fortheir popular franchisessuch asMass EffectandDragon Age, for the company to gain such popularity, it first had to create various ambitious titles – both successful and not – to make a name for themselves.

The company has continued to be ambitious as many of their newer titles, includingDragon Age: The Veilguard, have attempted to bring new players to the franchise, as well as experiment with the various genres they are well-known for, with titles likeAnthem.

As mentioned,Mass Effectis one of BioWare’s most popular franchises, with many players adoring the main character of Shepherd whom they have played consistently throughout the main franchise. However, with the introduction ofMass Effect: Andromeda, BioWare had been ambitious about creating a title that finally stepped away from Shepard. This was also the first game BioWare had created with the Frostbite engine, which ended up not going as planned, with many players finding the finished result ofMass Effect: Andromedato not look that great.

It didn’t help that BioWare’s team had to create an entirely new game from scratch using this new engine, which ended up causing a lot of issues for the team. Besides this, removing Shepardfrom a lot of players also meant that they had lost the connection to the franchise they loved. However, it wasn’t all bad, with some players enjoyingMass Effect: Andromedaand the story that was connected to it.

Although BioWare had already had games on consoles before developingStar Wars: Knights of the Old Republic, this was arguably an incredibly ambitious project for BioWare due to it being something as large astheStar Warsfranchise. By creating this incredibly successfulStar WarsRPG, BioWare was able to prove that they could make more than tactical RPGs and that they could work incredibly well on consoles such as the Xbox that it originally released in 2003.

This ambitious collaboration continued to push its potential, which worked out for the best for BioWare as, even years later, players praisedStar Wars: Knights of the Old Republicfor its incredible storyline, combat, and the dialogue that BioWare is commonly known for.

Dungeons and Dragonshas always been a popular table-top RPG with many players wishing they could experience something like it as a video game. BioWare is a company that has made this possible more than once with not onlyBaldur’s Gate,an incredible single-player RPG franchise that Larian Studios took over withBaldur’s Gate 3, but also the multiplayer marvel that is Neverwinter Nights.

Not to be mistaken with the online version ofNeverwinter Nights, this isometric RPG has three game modes for players to take part in; the campaign, the multiplayer mode, and custom content that allows players to create their own campaigns that they can share with other players.Neverwinter Nightsis considered one of BioWare’s most ambitious titles due to how large the multiplayer campaigns were when it was first released in 2002, with few other titles attempting anything like it.

WhileStar Wars: Knights of the Old Republicwas one of the firstStar Warsgames that BioWare had developed,Star Wars: The Old Republicwas another incredibly ambitious title by BioWare that came a few years afterward. BioWare already had experience creating bothmassive multiplayer titlesandStar Warsadventures. With this knowledge, they combined the two together to create the enthusiastic MMO RPG that has had many players hooked since 2011.

Although BioWare no longer runs the servers forStar Wars: The Old Republic, they are still the company responsible for making such a large RPG that not only has multiple classes, but each class has its own unique story, characters, and choices, that will lead players to face different endings. Although an MMO with great multiplayer content, this incredible solo story also meansStar Wars: The Old Republiccan be enjoyed alone.

Of all the BioWare games that have been created over the years, one of the most ambitious by the long-standing company isAnthem, the online multiplayer action RPG title. WhileAnthemwasn’t as successful as BioWare had originally expected, this doesn’t deny the fact that Anthem felt unlike any other title created by BioWare. Players had great praise for the fluidity and motion of the character, asAnthemhad all the workings of being a promising title, not to mention how incredibly detailed the title looked graphics-wise.

Anthemhad all the workings of being an incredible title, that just didn’t seem to lift off when it was released in 2019. A lot ofAnthem’sissues camefrom its bugs, long loading times, and unfortunate repetitive gameplay loop that saw many players get bored quickly, as well as the ambition of BioWare being stunted by multiple technical issues they faced too.
