The Witchergames have come a long way since the series first began back in 2007, and there is even more planned for its future. Based on the books by celebrated Polish author Andrzej Sapkowski,The Witcherhas expanded into a variety of media adaptations. Although Sapkowski’s books are notable fantasy novels, CD Projekt Red’s game adaptations helped introduce the story of Geralt to a larger audience.

There have been three games in the ongoing series, and asThe Witcher 3closes in on its 10-year anniversary, there are many questions about what the next entry will entail. With claims ofThe Witcher 4introducing a new protagonistto questions about Geralt’s potentially lessened role, speculation has been running rampant. The news mill has been pretty silent when it comes toThe Witcher 4updates, but a recent bit of information could bode well for the franchise’s future. Sapkowski recently revealed that he has completed a new book in the series, promising more content on the way.

The Witcher 4 Could Have Fresh Source Material For Inspiration

A Brand-New Well For CD Projekt Red to Draw From

Sapkowski was recently interviewed by French fantasy magazine Chimeres, and he dropped a major update regarding the book series. He confirmed that he had completed yet anotherWitcherbook, stating, “It took me maybe two years—something like this.” What is even more interesting is that the prolific author has hinted in the past that Geralt may not even be the main character of the book. This gives even more weight to the recent rumors claimingThe Witcher 4will get a new lead character. The world ofThe Witcherfranchise is vast, so there are many directions Sapkowski could be taking with this new story.

Although Geralt’s story in the books has been finished, that clearly hasn’t stopped Sapkowski from further expanding the lore he created. At 2018’s Warsaw Comic Con, Sapkowski shed some cryptic light on what more books in the series could involve. When discussing where he would like to take the story in future writings, Sapkowski said, “The saga has been concluded, so if by any chance I write something inThe Witcheruniverse, and I sure have such intention, it would probably be something like a prequel or a sidequel. Not a sequel.” The reveal of a potential prequel or sidequel forThe Witcheris compelling, as it could either feature already-established characters or introduce someone completely new.The lore ofThe Witcherlends itself to plenty of possibilities, and it makes sense that CD Projekt Red would be informed of its direction.

“It would probably be something like a prequel or a sidequel. Not a sequel.”

It isn’t out of the realm of possibility that Sapkowski has already informed CD Projekt Red of this new novel. If CD Projekt Red is aware, then it is highly likely that this new story is informing the development ofThe Witcher 4’s story.

The Direction of The Witcher Franchise Remains a Mystery

At the moment, CD Projekt Red has two massive projects on its hands. BetweenThe Witcher 4and Project Orion, the recently announced sequel toCyberpunk 2077, there are high expectations from many fans of the developer. The story ofThe Witcher 4may be a huge question mark right now, but it feels nearly certain that it will involve Sapkowski’s new story.

SinceThe WItcher 4is still in its early stages of development, there probably won’t be any more substantial updates for a while. It’s important for CD Projekt Red to take its time with development, but once Sapkowski’s next book is released, it could be the biggest update forThe Witcher 4yet.
