Summary
Fairy Tailhas been a staple in the world of shonen for over a decade, and with a new season out featuring the events of the100-Year-Quest, there is currently a renewed interest in the show.
In its amazing run,Fairy Tailhas featured a lot of villains, with some incredibly powerful bad guys appearing for the heroes to triumph over. Some of these villains can be considered generic, but others are truly intriguing. With that in mind, this list will examine some ofthe best villainsFairy Tailhas to offer, and not necessarily just the most powerful examples.
Anime Debut
Episode 301
Irene Belserionwas revealed to be the mother of Erza Scarlet, and also the creator of the Dragon Slayer Magic, being the first human to ever use it. She would meet her end at her own hands in a decision that shocked many.
Irene was more than just a big bad; she was a mother, a general, and an incredible mage. Her brilliant powers, including Universe One, which has the ability to alter reality, make her a compelling opponent. She is also one of the few characters who could stand up to Acnologia.
Episode 79
Erza Knightwalkerwas the counterpart to Erza Scarlet in Edolas, but unlike the other members of the guild who were still members of Fairy Tail but with different personalities, Erza Knightwalker was a villain who was working with the King to subdue magic.
She was one of the best things about the Edolas Arc, and the fact that she was still immensely strong, even though she was the complete opposite of the Earthland Erza, was remarkable.
Episode 21
Jose Porlawas theleader of Phantom Lord, a guild that rivaled Fairy Tail, and even featured two future Fairy Tail members as mages: Juvia and Gajeel. Jose’s motivations were pretty simple: he just really hated Fairy Tail.
As a villain, he was quite important to the story, as he wasFairy Tail’sfirst major threat, and there was a bit of a tonal shift as fans saw Fairy Tail truly suffer defeat initially. Jose was also irredeemable, which was cool considering how a lot ofFairy Tail’svillains tend to just switch sides eventually.
Fire And Flame
NA
Igniais the biological child of Igneel, who is Natsu’s adoptive father, which makes the two something akin to siblings. Ignia is one of the main villains of the 100-Year-Quest, and he is tremendously powerful, even potentially rivaling Acnologia.
The strange relationship between Ignia and Natsu, in which the former wants the latter to reach his full potential to fight him, is a highlight of the series and, while fans are yet to see the climatic showdown between the two, it is shaping up to be truly awesome.
Episode 101
Master Hadeswas theleader of Grimiore Heart, one of Fairy Tail’s toughest opponents. During the show, it is revealed that he was actually the second master of Fairy Tail after Mavis. He became corrupted in his search for the true source of magic.
The history Hades has with Fairy Tail makes him instantly compelling, and he is a great example of the destructive nature of obsession. He is eventually defeated when Natsu, with the power of most of his guild mates, deals the decisive blow.
Episode 96
Zerefacted as theprimary antagonist for theFairy Tailseries and, up until he first appeared, had only been spoken of in whispers. The build up to Zeref was amazing, and his introduction was really impressive, as fans watched everything around him wither and die.
It was nice to see that Zeref was not just a generic villain looking to take over the world, but a tragic personality looking for peace. The way his story ended might have been unsatisfactory to some, but he was a pretty good villain nonetheless.
Episode 33
Jellal Fernandezwas the main antagonist during the Tower Of Heaven Arc. He was also an old acquaintance of Erza and a major influence on her life. Jellal was portrayed as a very powerful mage, and was once even a member of the Magic Council.
His story was complex and tragic, and his motivations made sense in the light of his situation. Thanks to him, fans of the show really came to understand who Erza was as a character. He was cool, and had enough redeeming qualities not to be absolutely hated.
Episode 122
Fairy Tailhas had some excellent villains, and some poor ones, butAcnologiawas like nothing that anyone had encountered to that point. When everyone was first introduced to him in his dragon form, he proceeded to handily defeat the entire Fairy Tail guild.
A feat like Acnologia’s was very new in theFairy Tailseries, and seeing a character so dominant that he seemed untouchable was thrilling. The problem with such characters is that it is very, very difficult to write a satisfying defeat for them, and so it was with Acnologia. Regardless, he’ll still be remembered as one of the great anime villains.
Episode 190
Rogue is one of the main members of the Sabertooth guild, and is close with Sting. TheGrand Magic Games Arcconcluded with a version of Rogue from the future turning out to be the major villain.
Compared to the regular Rogue,Future Roguewas super cool, and while his motivations for evil (someone killed his best friend, Frosch) were considered weak by some, he did get things done efficiently, and in a manner not typically seen in other anime villains.
