Summary
Carol Danvers, who most fans know as Captain Marvelthese days, has been a mainstay in comic books since her introduction inMarvel Super-Heroes #13in March 1968. Since then, she has appeared in animation, blockbuster movies, and many Marvel video games.
With cosmic powers that help her rival the likes of The Hulk and Thanos, Captain Marvel is considered one of the strongest beings in the Marvel universe. This is often reflected in her gameplay, as she is able to easily lift any object with seemingly unlimited strength and fire photon blasts out of her hands, although some games portray her as a person and a hero better than others.
Before she was Captain Marvel, Carol Danvers debuted in video games withMarvel Ultimate Allianceas Ms. Marvel. Despite her being one of Marvel’s most powerful characters,Ultimate Alliancemade her one of the base characters on the large roster.
SinceUltimate Allianceis a dungeon-crawler RPG, Ms. Marvel featured all the abilities that one might expect from her: photon energy blasts, boosting herself with binary and cosmic shielding, and flight. Every hero has to start somewhere, and Carol Danvers quickly became a favorite because she would be a recurring character in the entire trilogy.
WithMarvel Ultimate Alliance 2being an adaptation of theCivil Warstoryline, fans wanting to play Ms. Marvel in the sequel will have to side with the Pro-Registration heroes. Carol sides withTony Stark, aka. Iron Man, in the battle between heroes, and fans will have a chance to learn about her and her motivations between missions.
For the most part,Ultimate Alliance 2sticks to being a safe sequel in terms of the character’s gameplay. However, Ms. Marvel is still just as fun as she was in the first game, but with the new fusion system, experimenting to see which heroes Ms. Marvel works with the best in creating massive superpowered attacks is an additional benefit.
Finally donning her Captain Marvel moniker, Carol Danvers was featured among many heroes and villains inLEGO Marvel’s Avengers, which takes after the Marvel Cinematic Universe in terms of its design. However, Captain Marvel hadn’t appeared in the movies yet, so it’s fun to see how Traveler’s Tales interpreted what they thought an MCU Captain Marvel would look like.
Captain Marvel even has her own solo story inLEGO Marvel’s Avengers, even if it is a small one. Other than that, it’sthe standard co-opLEGOgame affairwith platforming through levels, collecting studs, and experiencing a wholesome adventure for the entire family.
Typically, Marvel games make Captain Marvel into a show-stealing supporting character, butMarvel Future Revolutionmade her a major player in a multiversal mobile game. As Captain Marvel, or any of the available Marvel heroes, players can engage in quality action-RPG gameplay across a fused version of multiple Earths known as Primary Earth.
While it may have a lot of the same trappings as many other mobile games,Marvel Future Revolutionshows that a lot of care and effort was put into the game. Captain Marvel’s cosmic abilities lend themselves to delightful combat that is satisfying to level up and upgrade and proves that she is capable of leading a solo adventure game in the future.
While Captain Marvel doesn’t play that much differently from her previousLEGOappearances, she is a big part of the story inLEGO Marvel Super Heroes 2. With threats such as Ego The Living Planet, Kang The Conqueror, and others from across time and space, Captain Marvel ends up being integral to the heroes' journey.
Withone of the better Marvel open worlds,LEGO Marvel Super Heroes 2is another example of how theLEGOformula still works. Whether it is superheroes, dinosaurs, pirates, or Jedi,LEGOgames simply know how to make the experience hook the player.
Three for three,Marvel Ultimate Alliance 3helps solidify the trilogy as some ofthe best superhero games to play. This exclusive title for the Nintendo Switch brings together Marvel characters familiar and new to the series with a new visual style while maintaining the classic dungeon-crawler RPG gameplay that the trilogy is known for.
Carol Danvers returns yet again inUltimate Alliance 3,but this time as Captain Marvel, with her signature abilities given flashier animations, and remains a powerful character to have on the player’s team. Arguably, her third outing in the franchise is the best that she’s ever played.
Marvel’s Midnight Sunsshocked players by being a strong tactics game, an RPG, and a superhero story all rolled into one. Captain Marvel is featured, and very few other games have captured her spirit and kind-hearted nature as well asMidnight Sunsdid.
Throughout the story, if the player befriends her, Captain Marvel shows her true colors as someone who rushes in and doesn’t bother with stealth. However, Carol loves her friends, her world, and the galaxy, and will never give up the fight until her last breath is drawn. As a bonus, she loves her Book Club and has some of the best abilities to use in battle.
