Since the release ofFar Cry Primalin 2016, animals have played a much more significant role in theFar Cryfranchise.Rather than just creatures to be hunted for materials or fought off when they attack, animals became companions that could be tamed and befriended.
Far Cry Primalputs a strong focus on taming animals to become companions, as it’s set in the prehistoric age, so players can’t rely on guns or vehicles like they can in the otherFar Crygames. However, the idea ofanimal companionswas so fun and engaging that it was carried on inFar Cry 5andFar Cry 6.
We’re going to be looking atthe best animal companions from theFar Cryseriesin terms of how useful they are during gameplay, such as how well they can defend, protect, distract, and attack during combat.
TheSnowblood Wolfisone of the four Great Beastsfound inFar Cry Primal, and it is a particularly excellent companion for players to have on their side. The Snowblood Wolf is a little more menacing than other wolves in the game, as it has a unique design with snow-white fur, piercing blue eyes, and blood splattered over its muzzle and paws.
The wolf looks like it has recently made a particularly bloody kill, emphasizing the brutality and danger of the animal. Not only that, but the Snowblood Wolf is also a strong and sturdy beast companion that will howl majestically after it has made a kill.
Players will have to complete the “Snowblood Wolf Beast Master Hunt” quest if they want to obtain the wolf as a companion, but it’s definitely worth it.
Timberis one of the good boys of theFar Cryseries, appearing in the standaloneFar Cry New Dawn, a direct sequel toFar Cry 5.Timber is a Shiba Inu who can be rescued from the Highwaymen’s butcher shop in the game. He will become part of the Fangs for Hire squad if players do so. As well as being an adorable pup, Timber’s initial abilities are similar to Boomer fromFar Cry 5, as he can fetch valuable weapons and materials. He can also tag enemies and fight alongside the player.
Timber can be leveled up and gain more abilities when he gets enough kills. At fifteen kills, Timber can also tag materials to use for crafting and enemy alarm systems. At 40 kills, he will defend players against attacking animals. Timber is also the only Fangs for Hire animal inFar Cry New Dawnthat can sit with the player in their vehicle too. There’s nothing not to love about this brilliant boy.
6Great Scar Bear
Far Cry Primal
Next up is anotherFar Cry Primalcompanion who has been through a bit of a bad time. As the name suggests, theGreat Scar Bearis very scarred and has clearly been in a lot of fights. He is not only riddled with painful-looking scars, but he is missing fur and has several arrows sticking out of him.
He may look intimidating because of these wounds, but he can become an incredibly helpful companion. His large, brutish nature makes him tank-like, so he is a great choice for taking on groups of enemies at a time. Even though players can’t ride him into battle, he makes for a great companion to take into a significant fight due to his sheer strength and durability.
Next is anamigo fromFar Cry 6who would probably have been further up on this list if he wasn’t locked behind a paywall.K-9000is a metal robot dog who has enhanced durability, but can also be leveled up to gain stealthy skills.
K-9000’s initial ability is his Iron Skin skill. Because of his metal coat, he takes less damage from bullets and can’t be touched by fire or poison. His additional abilities are unlocked when he takes more damage. When he takes 100 damage, he can tag alarms, security cameras, turrets, and tripwires. His next ability is unlocked after tagging 24 security cameras, at which point his attacks against tagged enemies do more damage. When 50 tagged enemies are felled by K-9000, he can then self-destruct when he takes fatal damage. Don’t worry though, he always comes back.
As mentioned, the paywall that K-9000 is locked behind is more than a little frustrating and lowers his place on our list. Players need to purchase the Season Pass and access theBlood Dragon PackDLC to obtain him.
BoomerisFar Cry 5’sposter pup, and an incredibly useful Fangs for Hire animal companion to use during the game. Players can recruit him after rescuing him in the “Man’s Best Friend” mission during themain story ofFar Cry 5. Boomer’s abilities are Retriever and Pointer. With Pointer, he can tag all nearby enemies, making stealth attacks much easier. His Retriever skill allows him to fetch weapons from nearby enemies, which is always useful.
As a fighter, Boomer can be helpful in both stealth and full-frontal attack missions. His health is lower than some of the other Fangs for Hire, but his skills more than make up for it. For an adorable and loveable boy who will never let you down in a fight, opt for Boomer.
3Cheeseburger
Far Cry 5
It’s not every day that players get to befriend a diabetic grizzly bear with a penchant for fast food, butFar Cry 5offers the opportunity to do so.Cheeseburgerthe bear is a fun and silly character, but he’s also a great heavy companion who is incredibly durable.
Cheeseburger is unlocked upon completion of the “A Right to Bear Arms” mission. Once players have unlocked him, he can be used to unleash some devastating head on attacks on enemies. His skills — Bear Arms and Cross to Bear — are all about upping his attack and increasing his focus, making him a force to be reckoned with.
The tank-like nature of Cheeseburger does make him a large target for enemies, but he can hold his own against smaller firearms and even flamethrowers. He also has the cutest animation when he gets pets.
2Bloodfang Sabertooth
TheBloodfang Sabertoothis arguably the best Great Beast inFar Cry Primalthanks to its immense strength, speed, and stealth. The Bloodfang is much stronger than the other sabertooth tigers in the game, and it shows. He is much more muscled and intimidating, especially with the blood spattered on his muzzle and protruding teeth.
Players can also ride the Bloodfang Sabretooth, so as well as having a tough companion to take care of enemies, they can also ride it into battle. What could be better than that?
1Oluso
Far Cry 6
The best animal companion in any of theFar Crygames has to beOlusofromFar Cry 6. Oluso is a supernatural black jaguar who has been blessed by the Power of the Oluwas. Players don’t need to pay to unlock her, but they will have to complete the five missions that make up the “Triada Blessings” side quest. Because of the effort that is needed to unlock Oluso, she is one of themore elusive companions.
Oluso is all about stealth combined with aggressive attacks. She is an assassin-like amigo, moving in the shadows and striking with precision. Not only does she take out enemies quickly and quietly, but any enemies killed by her will vanish into smoke immediately, so other enemies won’t be able to discover their bodies.
Oluso has three skills unlocked when she reaches certain milestones. These skills are Mist of Oku, Mimo Abosi’s Luck, and Rage of Ida. Mimo Abosi’s Luck increases the chances of Oluso being successful with her stealth takedowns during firefights. It’s unlocked once 12 enemies have been killed by her in restricted areas.
Rage of Ida will cause enemies to become frightened and flee when Oluso has performed a successful takedown. This is unlocked when she has performed 24 lethal takedowns. Last but not least is Mist of Oku, which allows Oluso to disappear into a smoke cloud when her health is low. When hidden, she becomes immune to any damage and regenerates health much faster. This can only be used once Oluso has scared 50 enemies with her lethal takedowns.
The perfect combination of stealthy precision and powerful strength — with a terrifying yet beautiful presence to match thanks to her black coat and glowing blue eyes — Oluso claims the number one spot forthe best animal companion in theFar Cryseries.
