Summary

The24 Movieis officially in the works at 20th Century Studios andDisney. Kiefer Sutherland hasn’t yet signed on to reprise the role of eponymous ex-Federal agent Jack Bauer, but it’s surely only a matter of time before he does. The big screen adaptation is in the early stages of development, and it’ll finally move forward after years of development hell. The action series failed to definitively end Jack Bauer’s story on two separate occasions, so there is definitely unfinished business that the24 Movieneeds to deal with.

24originally ran for eight seasons on Fox between 2001-2010 and ended withJack Baueron the run from the authorities after he went on a killing spree to avenge Renee Walker’s death at the hands of the Russians. Bauer resurfaced four years later in London, in the spin-off limited series,24: Live Another Day.Theshowabruptly ended with Bauer being captured by the Russians. Fast-forward ten years, andthe24 Moviecould finally give Jack Bauer the ending he deserves.

Jack Bauer has had plenty of near-death experiences over the years, but he always survived to fight another day of terrorist attacks on24. When the action series ended in 2010, Bauer arguably went too far when he embarked on a nihilistic killing spree, taking down the Russians, after they killed his lover, Renee Walker (Annie Wersching). Bauer’s long-time trusted ally, Chloe O’Brian (Mary Lynn Rajskub), made sure he was able to escape prosecution, and the series ended with Bauer on the run.It was an unsatisfying ending which led to Bauer’s return four years later in24: Live Another Day. However, the limited series also ended in a way that failed to wrap up Jack Bauer’s story.

24: Live Another Dayconsisted of 12 episodes instead of the usual 24, but events still took place in real time over the course of one day. However, it skipped forward a few hours at the end of the final episode, to show Jack Bauer handing himself over to the Russians to save Chloe’s life.It wasn’t the definitive ending that fans were promised, and it left Jack Bauer with yet another ambiguous outcome.A spin-off series titled24: Legacywas released in 2017, but there was no mention of Jack Bauer, despite the show existing within the same universe. There has been talk over the years that Jack Bauer might return one day, and Kiefer Sutherland stated he was keen to reprise the role in aninterview with GQback in 2022:

I miss it. It was an incredible experience. I have learned that you’re just better off not to be definitive about your answer of whether you will do something or not do something. I love playing that character (Bauer). I do believe the story is unresolved. If something were to be written that made sense to me and that I thought was going to contribute to the franchise, then I would be behind it.

The 24: Movie Has The Perfect Opportunity To Set Up Jack Bauer’s Final Swansong

If Kiefer Sutherland does sign on to play Jack Bauer in the upcoming24 Movie, it could lead to one of thebest actionseries becoming a successful movie franchise. That means thata definitive ending for Jack Bauer could be a long way off yet, but the24 Moviecould at least set up the iconic character’s final swansong. It’s very unlikely that the24 Movieis moving ahead with the intention of completing Jack Bauer’s story in one story, as it’s all about franchises and universe building in Hollywood these days. Inevitably,24will have to come to an end at some point, and the movie could set it up.

Many fans want to see Kiefer Sutherland play Jack Bauer inthe24return, and it’s looking increasingly likely that this will happen soon, with the24 Movieofficially in production. In many ways,it would be fitting if Jack Bauer’s story ended on the big screen,as the series always felt like one big movie, with stunning action sequences. Imagine Entertainment co-founder, Brian Grazer, is on board to produce theupcoming24big screen adventure, and he had stated in the past how difficult it has been to bring the series to the big screen. However, the passage of time has clearly reinvigorated the creative process. Grazer spoke about the24 Moviein aninterview with MSNBC’s Squawk Box:

Imagine has always played in that zone where there is that high probability chance that it will be successful in movie theaters. It’s great for us because we’ve built, over 30 years, over 100 different products and brands. 24 (is) a movie that we’re going to do in a very interesting way with Disney and Fox.
