Pokemon GOis getting set for a new Team GO Rocket-based event that will allow players to rescue a Shadow Pokemon version of the Legendary Fire and Steel-type Pokemon Heatran from the villainous organization. The limited-time event is set to hitPokemon GOon October 8.
Team GO Rocket was introduced toPokemon GOalongside the existence of Shadow Pokemon in July 2019, just over three years after the launch of the augmented reality mobile game. Both grunts and leaders can be encountered and battled at PokeStops and in roving hot air balloons, and an early publicity campaign even had real-world grunts challenging players and defacingPokemon GOposters throughout New York City.
For the upcoming event, titled Galarian Expedition: Taken Over, players will be able to undertake a Seasonal Special Research quest line that will culminate in them receiving a Super Rocket Radar, which will allow them to challengelongtime Team Rocket leader Giovanniin a bid to save Shadow Heatran from his clutches. While the event only lasts from midnight local time on October 8 through 8 PM on October 11, players will be able to continue this research quest through December 3 at 9:59 AM. The event will also include a new batch of six other Shadow Pokemon for players to collect from encounters with Team GO Rocket, most of which have a chance of being Shiny, as well as some unspecified event-themed Pokemon.

While the prospect of picking up and possibly purifying a Shadow Heatran may appeal to a lot of players, there are other Team GO Rocket-based rewards occurring during the special event. Players will be able to have more frequent encounters withTeam GO Rocket leadersand grunts at both PokeStops and hot air balloons. Additionally, players who have a large stock of Shadow Pokemon and some Charged TMs on hand are in for a treat, as the event will allow players to use charged TMs to teach Shadow Pokemon a charged move other than the rather weak Normal-type move Frustration.
The lastTeam GO Rocket event inPokemon GOtook place during the second week of August. While that event gave players a chance to get their hands on Shadow Cresselia and Shadow Lugia, it left some fans feeling disappointed at Shadow Rayquaza’s exclusion, despite the Shard Skies season’s heavy focus on the Legendary dragon.
