Summary

AStardew Valleyplayer has found a way to make the annoyance of catching trash items while fishing a little more tolerable, by carrying a Recycling Machine with them on their excursions. While reeling in a Soggy Newspaper or a pair of Broken Glasses inStardew Valleydoesn’t net a big profit margin on its own, this method opens the door to getting some less common items without having to trek back to the farm.

There aremore than 60Stardew Valleyfishthat players can hunt down in the game’s various fishing spots, split up by geography, season, and time of day. But when a player casts a line, there’s also the chance that they’ll reel in one of six trash items instead. While a few of these have uses on their own, such as Driftwood being a liked gift for Leah and Joja Cola granting small boosts to speed, health, and energy, most can also be recycled into more useful products.

That seems to be the mindset of Reddit user Shot-Serve-872, who came up with the brilliant idea of adding a Recycling Machine to their bag whenever they’re going fishing and plopping it down right next to theirfishing spot inStardew Valley. They shared an image of their character casting a line just north of the stone bridge by Mayor Lewis' house, with a Recycling Machine right behind the player character, noting that the method has actually made catching trash items fun.

Stardew Valley Player Makes Catching Trash Items Fun

TheRecycling Machine inStardew Valleycan be a good way to get some less common items for cheap. For example, the normal method of getting Refined Quartz is to place a Quartz or a Fire Quartz into a furnace, but this method also consumes one Coal each time a player uses it, and it uses up 90 minutes of in-game time. Both the Broken Glasses and the Broken CD always produce one Refined Quartz when placed in a Recycling Machine, but that process requires no Coal and cuts 30 minutes off the processing time. Likewise, it takes four hours to turn Wool into Cloth using a loom, but only one hour with a Soggy Newspaper in a Recycling machine. Still, there’s only a 10 percent chance of receiving Wool using this method, which doesn’t entirely eliminate the need for Sheep or Rabbits.

A few commenters took the idea even further, suggesting placing Recycling Machines around the valley for easy access, so long as they’re mindful not to put them in any NPCs paths. For PC players who already haveaccess to theStardew Valley1.6 update, others have suggested adding Fish Smokers to fishing areas, doubling the value of any caught fish.
