Along with a 20-hour main story,Star Wars Outlawscomes with five fully explorable planets, each one packed with side missions, NPCs, vendors, minigames, and additional activities. There are also plenty of Easter eggs and references hidden insideStar Wars Outlaws, and developer Massive has tried to connect the game to as much of theStar Warsuniverse as possible.
There are countless ties betweenStar Wars Outlawsand the rest of theStar Warsfranchise, but there’s a particularly strong connection between the Ubisoft game andStar Warsspinoff projects likeSolo,RogueOne, andAndor. On top of Easter eggs related to theseStar Warsspinoffs,Outlawsembraces one series trend that took center stage inRogue OneandAndor.
Star Wars Outlaws Follows a Rogue One, Andor Trend With its Rebels
Rogue One and Andor Show a Darker Side of the Rebel Alliance
InStar Wars' original trilogy, the Rebels are always portrayed as the good guys. Even when they destroy the Death Star and technically kill the over one million people aboard, and then destroy the second Death Star, which has even more on it, it’s never displayed as a morally questionable thing. In fact, it’s always shown in the exact opposite light, with the Rebels being viewed as unequivocal heroes who saved the galaxy.
In the last decade or so, variousStar Warscreators have tried to challenge this portrayal.Star Wars: The Clone Warsintroduced the character of Saw Gerrera, a young rebel who led the charge against the Separatists and their occupation of Onderon. It’s briefly teased that Gerrera is willing to do whatever it takes to save his people, and that includes the accidental death of his sister.
Rogue Onefirmly embraced this theme, introducingthe character Cassian Andor. In one of the first scenes of the movie and Andor’s very first introduction to theStar Warsuniverse, he’s shown shooting an informant in the back so he can escape an Imperial patrol and report back to the Rebel base on Yavin 4. Throughout the movie, it’s repeatedly stated that Cassian Andor will do whatever’s needed to win the war against the Empire, including killing Galen Erso in an attempt to stop the Death Star project.
2022’sAndorDisney+ show continued to double down on this depiction of the Rebel Alliance, withStellan Skarsgard’s Luthen Raelbeing the show’s representation of the darker side ofStar Wars' Rebellion. Luthen’s monologue about the sacrifice it takes to fight as a Rebel is the perfect encapsulation of this newStar Warstheme, with Luthen claiming that he’s “condemned to use the tools of [his] enemy to defeat them,” and that he will “burn [his] life to make a sunrise [he’ll] never see.”
How Star Wars Outlaws Continues This Trend
Though the Rebel Alliance doesn’t show up too often inStar Wars Outlaws, its brief time on-screen does continueRogue OneandAndor’s more nuanced depiction of the Rebellion. In the game’s opening hour, player-character Kay Vess is hired to break into the Zerek Besh leader’s vault. Upon opening the vault, Vess finds a captured Rebel spy named Asara.
Asara quickly offers Vess a place in the Rebel Alliance, but Vess demands the money she was promised. Asara’s Rebel ally Dennion then exclaims that they have no time to discuss the issue, and she decides to stun Kay Vess, leaving her at the mercy of the ruthlessZerek Besh criminal syndicate, and showing once again that the Rebels will do whatever they must to fight another day.
