Summary
Fans ofElden Ringon Steam are warning fellow players against a group of nefarious hackers who could threaten their victims' save files. The hackers enter other players’Elden Ringonline sessions as invaders, and the hacks or cheats they deploy could cause their victims' save files to be affected.
FromSoftware’s idiosyncratic approach to online functionality is legendary. First established inDemon’s Souls, the developer’s signature multiplayer feature enables online players to drop into another player’s session - sometimes as a hostile invader bent on killing their victim. The system is taken to another level inElden Ring, which has nurtured its own healthy player-versus-player scene. It’s gotten to the point thatsomeElden Ringplayers trade tips for PVPand spend their time seeking that perfect duel in other players' sessions.
Unfortunately, though, not all invaders play by the rules set byElden Ringand FromSoftware. Such is the case with “Shadow of Cinderella,” a group of alleged hackers that players on theElden RingSteam communityare warning against. According to the complaint, Shadow of Cinderella practices hacking, cheating, and “stream sniping,” the practice of harassing streamers by entering their games while on stream and killing them repeatedly or doing other things to cause grief. Worse still, simply coming into contact with players using hacks can affect a victim’s save file adversely, as a hacker can enter a player’s game and kill an endgame boss before they even encounter it themselves, ruining their experience.
Elden Ring Steam Players Warn Against Hacker Group
According to their Steam Group page, Shadow of Cinderella describes itself as a group of Chinese players of the “lowest moral accomplishment,” actively researching and deployinghacks and cheats inElden Ring. The group is roughly 38 members strong, and advertises itself with clips of hacks and stream sniping stunts.
Players warning against them are advising others to block and report the known members of the group. Blocking a person on Steam inElden Ringreduces the chance of encountering that person in matchmaking via summon or invasion. They also advised players to create backups of their saves on PC, just in case an encounter with a Shadow of Cinderella member or another random hacker causes a save file disruption.
While someElden Ringhacks and exploitscan be entertaining to encounter, more often than not they can lead to frustration and ruin the experience for one party. It’ll be up to Bandai Namco and FromSoftware to patch out potential exploits and avenues for cheaters and hackers to use to enter and victimize others. If not, multiplayer in their games may come to be seen as more of a liability than a benefit.
