One ofEnotria: The Last Song’sbiggest strengths is its presentation. Unlikea lot of Soulslikesthat are all doom, gloom, and the world ending, Enotria has a more vibrant and, let’s say, cultural take on the genre.
Everything inEnotriais filtered through the lens of Italian culture. From the music to the enemy types to the story to the level design, all aspects are in some way connected to Italy. Naturally, this includes dialogue and voice acting as well. Players just diving into the game will want to know the best option to get the full experience. Should they exclusively use the Italian audio to immerse themselves in the game world, or is English the more palatable option? Here’s the breakdown.
Should You Play Enotria In English Or Italian
English speakers who don’t speak Italian should play the game with English audio and English subtitles. While the Italian voice acting is excellent, and it is possible to use English subtitles with Italian audio, it can quickly get very annoying to stop, wait, and read all the subtitles of what the NPCs are saying as they’re saying it to understand what’s being said. Additionally, the English voice acting is excellent. The dialogue sounds like it’s coming from an authentic Italian who speaks English, rather than an American imitating the genuine article. It’s not so over the top as to become cringe and not so mild that it becomes indistinguishable.
Unlike a subbed anime episode, dialogue is happening all around you as you’re playing the game, and it’s not just one person speaking.Enotria: The Last Songis avery atmospheric gamewith tons to do and lots to hear, and that liveliness comes at the cost of focus. Most notably, the devs have placed special NPCs at key locations throughout the game world that do a sort of informal play every time the player passes by them. This is fully voice-acted and comes with a lot of dialogue. With Italian audio, you will be forced to read through a wall of text every time this happens. On its own, this isn’t a problem, but when you’re surrounded by hostile enemies and need to pay attention to combat, reading subtitles at the same time is impossible. Invariably, this will either lead to you ignoring the dialogue completely or having to revisit the location again to hear the play. Arguably,Enotria’sbest feature is its presentation, both visual and auditory. Making it less enjoyable does not benefit anyone and will only detract from the game’s experience.
