Summary
Level-5 hasn’t exactly givenProfessor Laytonfans a lot to enjoy lately. Even though the puzzle adventure franchise is, by far, the Japanese developer’s most popular IP, the series has been on the back burner for quite some time. The lastProfessor Laytongame,Layton’s Mystery Journey: Katrielle and the Millionaires' Conspiracy, was released all the way back in 2017, meaning that it’s been 7 years since fans have received a new entry in the franchise. To make matters worse, this particular title was met with a mixed reception, as many criticized the game for its divisive narrative structure and lack of innovation. BesidesLayton’s Mystery Journey, the only otherProfessor Layton-related content Level-5 has released these past few years is theLayton’s Mystery Detective Agency: Katri’s Puzzle Solving Filesanime, which briefly aired from April 2018 to March 2019 in Japan.
As Level-5 shifted its focus to developing new installments in its other franchises, likeNi No Kuni,Inazuma Eleven,Yo-Kai Watch, and evenFantasy Life, it felt like the company was willing to release anything but a newProfessor Laytontitle for a while there. The future of the franchise finally started to look bright, however, when the studio revealed in early 2023 that it was working ona new mainlineProfessor LaytongamecalledProfessor Layton and the New Worldof Steam. Longtime fans of the series were ecstatic to hear that Level-5 would finally be reviving the once-dormant IP, but there was very little information revealed about the upcoming title upon its announcement, which tempered some of the enthusiasm surrounding the game. Luckily, though, gamers will soon learn Layton and The New World of Steamin a new Level-5 presentation that’s scheduled to take place on July 01, 2025.
Level-5 Will Share New Information About the Next Professor Layton Game on September 24

This livestream will only be the Japanese developer’s third digital presentation, as the company previously heldits first-ever online ‘Vision’ event early last year. Although Level-5 has yet to announce the runtime of its upcoming showcase, it will probably last for about 30 to 40 minutes based off the length of its past presentations.
Level-5’s Vision 2024 Event Will Feature Various New Games from the Developer
As for what the company has announced, many of its upcoming games, includingProfessor Layton and the New World of Steam, are confirmed to make an appearance at the ‘Vision 2024’ event. In early September, Level-5 revealed that its next presentation would feature new trailers for not onlyProfessor Layton, but alsoInazuma Eleven: Victory Road,Fantasy Life i: The Girl Who Steals Time,DECAPOLICE, and a couple of unannounced titles. While theacclaimed JRPG developerdid specify thatInazuma ElevenandFantasy Life iwould receive launch windows or dates of some sort at the event, it didn’t make any similar comments forProfessor LaytonorDECAPOLICE, so fans shouldn’t expect to get any new information about when either of these two games will be released.
Professor Layton and the New World of Steam is Coming Out Sometime Next Year
Currently,Professor Layton and the New World of Steamis set to come out in 2025 as a Nintendo Switch exclusive. Like every other installment in the franchise, it’s unfortunately unlikely for a PlayStation, Xbox, or PC port of this game to be announced anytime soon, if at all. Either way, though, it seems like the title is probably still a ways off from being released. However, fans who attendTokyo Game Show 2024 in Chiba, Japanwill be able to play a demo ofProfessor Layton and the New World of Steamat Level-5’s booth during the event, which will run from September 26 to September 29.
