Summary
While I enjoy slashers, paranormal stories, and films that are both scary and humorous, my idealhorrormovie will always be an entry in theScreamfranchise. Since the original 1996 movie is my all-time favorite, I’m excited forScream 7. It will be interesting to see Sidney Prescott (Neve Campbell) with a family and to learn who the other cast members are.
However,Courteney Cox recently gave an interview aboutScream 7that made me nervous. While there are a lot ofintense and memorableScream 7fan theoriesand people have different opinions, every fan has been hoping to hear more details from the cast members themselves. What did Cox say and what could it mean for the next installment in the horror franchise?
What Did Courteney Cox Say About Scream 7?
According toVariety, Courteney Cox talked about Scream 7 at a charity event for Rock4EB in September 2024. She said:
“I’m not officially signed on. I’m not, but there will be a ‘Scream 7.’”
The star thentalked about the upsetting and tragic death of a beloved character and how she thinks he should come back for the horror sequel. Cox said:
“I understand the reasons they did it, but whoa! Talk about a missed character. Dewey is so loved by ‘Scream’ fans. They have to figure it out.”
I think that Cox’s comments brings up a major problem withScream 7:the movie needs more legacy characters than just Sidney Prescott.Since Cox hasn’t signed a contract to come back as Gale Weathers, that could mean that Gale isn’t going to come back to the slasher franchise, which would be a shame.Gale needs to have a strong storyline inScream 7, if Cox does come back. She’s just as crucial a character as Sidney since she’s clever and often gets close to Ghostface since she’s always reporting on the drama and action. It would feel like something was missing if Cox didn’t reprise her role.
Cox was right to say that everyone loves and misses Dewey Riley (David Arquette). Although it might have seemed like a big death needed to happen inScream (2022), I think thatkilling Dewey was a bad ideasince he was such a kind character. He added a heartwarming levity to every scene that he was in, and that balanced out the harsher, cruel characters like Ghostface. Now that Dewey is gone,there aren’t many beloved, iconic characters who can return to the franchise.
If Dewey did return, he would have to come back in flashbacks or as a ghost, and both ideas could be too corny.Scream 7shouldn’t have any characters hallucinating Dewey the way that Sam Carpenter (Melissa Barrera) seesBilly Loomis (Skeet Ulrich) inScream (2022)andScream 6.It would even be tough to have Gale remember Dewey since it would be hard to make sure that this didn’t feel cheesy or overly emotional, which isn’t the right tone tone for theScreamfranchise.
In 2022, Cox talked toVarietyabout appearing inScream 6and also touched on future appearances. She said:
“I did not die so yes you will see me. Gale’s pretty strong. She may not ever [die], but who knows!”
While it’s great tosee Sidney again inScream 7,Sidney isn’t as strong without Gale and Dewey sincethey have grown up together and gone through an intense trauma. It’s disappointing to think that the three characters, who got along so well after some initial tension between Sidney and Gale, will never be in aScreammovie again.
What Happened To Courteney Cox’s Scream Character Gale Weathers Throughout The Franchise?
Gale Weathers has a compelling arcthroughout theScreamfranchise and is one of my favorite characters. InScream, she reports on Ghostface coming to Woodsboro, California, and she and Sidney Prescott are enemies since they disagree about Cotton Weary’s innocence.
Gale’s journalism career and relationship with Dewey Rileyare the two main components of her character arc. Since she’s tough and abrasive and he’s sweet and innocent, they balance each other out and prove that opposites attract. The two meet inScreamand their relationship progresses throughout the franchise. Gale plays a similar role inScream 2,Scream 3, andScream 4, although she doesn’t have as much to do inScream (2022).Gale and Dewey get divorced because she moves to New York City to host a morning show and start a new life, andGale fights back against Ghostfacein a dark, violent, and scaryScream 6scene. Hopefully Gale will be inScream 7and will win against Ghostface once again.
