Obtaining the resources to craft the space elevator is pretty easy. If you want to get it done early on, then place a handful of portable miners over the required ore deposits. While the portable miners passively gather ore, join in and start mining ore next to one of the portable miners to speed up the process. Once you have all the materials, simply open up the build menu, select the space elevator, and place it down in a large open area.
