IndieWirespoke with Calle at the Toronto International Film Festival (TIFF) during the premiere of her new film “On Swift Horses,” which also cast Jacob Elordi, Daisy Edgar-Jones, Diego Calva and Will Pouter. She was asked about Alcock taking over theSupergirlrole. “Have so much fun. You look so badass, I love that. Just f***ng kill it and have fun,” Calle said. The interview received several reactions, with many expressing support for Calle because they loved her performance asSupergirl inThe Flash. Several said she deserved better because James Gunn could have cast her for the role.
Calle spoke about herSupergirlcasting in a previous interview. She broke barriers by being the first Latina to portray the role, which was previously played byMelissa Benoist, Laura Vandervoort, and Molly Quinn, to name a few. Calle admitted that it was an “out-of-the-body experience” to play the character and she became emotional when she saw the footage. “I kind of became a five-year-old version of myself looking at this superhero that looked like me, and I couldn’t believe it. I started crying and I got really emotional. I wish I would’ve had her when I was little,” she toldPeoplein June 2023. Looking back at how she landed the role, Calle said she didn’t know she was auditioning for theSupergirlrole when she received a script titled “Untitled Warner Bros. Film.” “It was very under wraps. I had to sign an NDA. And [the character] description was very brief,” she explained.
Although Calle only made a brief appearance asSupergirl, considering she only played the character in one movie with limited screen time, her performance received positive feedback from the viewers. She had a strong screen presence, which made her effective in portraying the fierce and powerful superhero. Her portrayal was also a fresh take on the character because it was the version ofSupergirlwho was held captive by humans. She was more emotionally complex than the optimistic Kara Zor-El fans usually saw. Since Calle’s portrayal was superb, many thought she would take the lead inSupergirl: Woman of Tomorrow. Thus, it’s understandable why some are disappointed that she wasn’t offered the role. Regardless, Calle is visibly supportive of Alcock as the nextSupergirl. Helen Slater, who headlined theSupergirlmovie in 1984, alsoexpressed support for Alcock’s casting.
