Summary
According to backend evidence from a source, theNintendo Switch OnlineSNES app may soon support the forgotten SNES Mouse peripheral for a handful of compatible titles. The source also claimed that the September 17Nintendo Switch OnlineSNES app update expanded how SNES Mouse support could be utilized.
Originally released in 1992, the SNES Mouse was a two-button mouse bundled with a gray, plastic mouse pad andthe artsy gameMario Paint. The SNES Mouse’s colors matched the SNES itself, as it was light gray with two purple buttons and a black connecting cable. The SNES Mouse used the first controller slot of the SNES console for most games. Because it used the SNES' proprietary connector, the SNES Mouse was incompatible with PCs. While it was available, the SNES Mouse was also sold separately for under $30. Since then, third-party companies have remade the SNES Mouse under different names, such as Hyperkin’s Hyper Click Retro-Style Mouse.
Though all rumors must be taken with a fine pinch of salt, the SNES Mouse may soon return to the spotlight. ATumblr post by a dataminer named LuigiBlood(viaVGC) stated that Nintendo secretly reworked SNES Mouse functionality that had been part of the experience from the launch of the SNES app for Nintendo Switch Online. LuigiBlood saidthe September 17 SNES app update, which included games likeBattletoads/Double Dragon, was when the changes were made. The emulation of the SNES Mouse was retooled to read either controller port rather than just the first, and code was discovered that could be used to configure the SNES Mouse’s behavior to be either closer to its original release or to something else entirely.
Nintendo Switch Online May Add SNES Mouse Support
Given that the SNES remainsone of Nintendo’s most popular consoles, any attempts to add more titles to the Switch Online service would be a likely hit with fans. It remains to be seen if games likeMario Paintwill be added to the app in future updates.
