One Marvel veteran is reportedly offered a major role in the upcomingGreen Lanternseries titledLanterns. However, it remains unclear if the actor would say “yes” to the offer.
It has been five years since screenwriter and film producer Greg Berlanti began working onDCU’sGreen Lanternseries. It was initially set to follow Guy Gardner and Hal Jordan’s adventures, but the script was scrapped when James Gunn and Peter Safran took over DC Studios. Both decided to rewrite the whole project, opting for a completely different take. Finally, there’s a new development aboutLanterns, with an insider giving an update about the casting, which surprisingly includes an actor who played a powerful villain in theMarvel Cinematic Universe.
Josh Brolin is offered to play veteran Green Lantern Hal Jordan inLanterns, according toNexus Point News. The character is described as a Lantern legend and a member of the Corps. Several white actors in their 40s and 50s were being considered for the role, but Brolin was reportedly the top choice. It remains to be seen if Brolin would accept the offer. If he declines, the offer will move down to the actors on the shortlist, which reportedly includesChris Pineand Timothy Olyphant.Ryan Reynoldspreviously played Hal Jordan in the 2011 movieGreen Lantern. Reynolds is now one of the famous MCU stars, having played the Merc with a Mouth in threeDeadpoolfilms.
TV and movie insiderJeff Sneideralso made the same report – Brolin being offered a role inLanterns. He added that Stephen Williams, who directedLost,Watchmen andWestworld, was in talks to helm the pilot episode. The prospect of Brolin joining the upcoming DCU series received mixed responses from fans. Some felt he would make a great Batman, but not a Green Lantern. Others were not convinced because of his age. Previous reports claimed the casting team was looking for actors in their 40s to play Hal, but Brolin is already 56. A few said he was too old for the character. Meanwhile, several are thrilled because they have been waiting for the series for years.
Brolin is a versatile actor and can surely pull off any character. He is also no stranger to the superhero genre, having portrayed Thanos in multiple MCU movies, includingGuardians of the Galaxy, Avengers: Age of Ultron, Avengers: Infinity WarandAvengers: Endgame. He also played Cable inDeadpool 2. Brolin also headlined the 2010 superhero filmJonah Hex, based on the DC Comics character of the same name. So, it’s understandable if he was the top choice for theLanternsseries.
As for age, several Hollywood actors remain active with great careers even if they are approaching 60s, like Robert Downey Jr, who is already 59. RDJ, who is best known as Iron Man, isreturning to the next twoAvengersmovies as Doctor Doom. Everything is possible, but fans should take the reports with a grain of salt until DC Studios makes an official announcement about the casting. Also, Nexus noted that Brolin hasn’t decided about the offer yet. If he declines the job, another actor would definitely love to play the role. Fans can expect to hear more news while the show is in development.
Lanternshas no official release date yet, but HBO has officially picked up the series.
