There are a lot of reasons for fans ofRemnant 2to be excited about the game’s third and final promised DLC content with The Dark Horizon expansion, but few stack up to the buzz surrounding the introduction of the new Warden Archetype. As a powerful addition toRemnant 2’s existing meta, the Warden gives both new and returning players more survivability in the early-to-mid game, allowing them to be more sufficient in solo play thanks to a toolkit that includes a drone with three different modes: combat, healing, and shield. For anyone who may be a lapsed player, the Warden represents a strong excuse to dive back intoRemnant 2.
In a recent conversation with Game Rant to discuss the design process behind creating the Warden and other Archetypes,Remnant 2’s lead designers spoke about the reasons why players might want to roll a brand new character using the Warden after picking upThe Dark Horizon. As a strong support class that’s more than capable of holding its own in combat, the Warden is a flexible option with plenty of utility that proves to be just as viable in solo play as it is in co-op as part of a team.
Remnant 2’s Designers Break Down What Makes the Warden a Great Archetype
One of the biggest selling points for the Warden Archetype is its intentional synergy with every other existingArchetype inRemnant 2. As another of the classes built around the lore of N’Erud, the Warden synergizes especially well with the Engineer, but that doesn’t mean other team compositions shouldn’t roll a Warden into their ranks. Principal gameplay designer Ben Cureton notes that the introduction of the Warden is meant to be a great class that works with everything that already exists in theRemnant 2meta.
“We thought with this one, let’s ensure each drone can provide something to every build, within reason.”
To that end, the Warden ends up being an incredibly strong starting class that is great for new players, but also presents a strong option for returning players who are interested in rolling a new character to check out all the changes and updates that arrive alongside The Dark Horizon’s story content. Cureton again points out that the Warden’s power and versatility were intentional design choices to help support thechanges coming toRemnant 2.
“I think that is going to provide a huge bonus or benefit to players coming back. It’s going to be a different starting experience, right?
You’re going to feel a little bit more powerful right off the bat and then hopefully it evens out, but it is a pretty strong class overall because it’s very versatile. Then we have things like Prisms, but that’s not directly related to the Warden.”
The newPrism system inRemnant 2is designed as a way to make the endgame progression both more exciting and more varied. Taken together with the introduction of the Warden Archetype, it’s clear that the new updates coming toRemnant 2are intended to deliver more of what fans already enjoy about the title and its power fantasy. As senior designer Steve Bednarz points out, “the Warden, specifically, will pair well with anything where people are trying to be more tanky or have more survivability.”
