Summary
Sony has started rolling out a new system software update for allPlayStation 5models, bringing new features like a Welcome hub and personalized 3D audio profiles. ThePS5’sarsenal of features has steadily grown thanks to regular firmware updates since the console launched back in 2020, and the latest September 2024 update is set to add to that list further.
PlayStation has lately been on a roll with new announcements as the gaming giant celebrates its 30th anniversary this year. The companyrevealed the long-awaited PS5 Projust two days ago, and while many core PlayStation enthusiasts are looking forward to the upgraded console, its $700 cost has priced out a lot of people. For those who’ve decided to soldier on with their current PS5s, Sony has confirmed a new firmware update heading their way.
Most of the features in the latest update were previewed in theJuly 2024 PS5 system software beta, but a new PlayStation.Blog post outlines everything PS5 users can expect in update 24.06-10.00.00. The most prominent addition in this update is the Welcome hub that can be found on the PS5’s main menu. Users can view cursory information such as battery levels for connected devices, available storage space, online friends, and more on the Welcome hub, and can also customize it with widgets and backgrounds of their choice. The Welcome hub will have a phased rollout, so it’ll only be available to a handful of PS5 users right now.
It’s worth noting that the Welcome hub’s backgrounds won’t be a system-level change, so they aren’t quite thecustom themes many PS5 players have been requesting. Aside from the Welcome hub, the new PS5 firmware update also adds personalized 3D audio profiles, which fine-tune 3D audio output by running various tests that assess the user’s hearing levels. Those who own a PS5 Slim can also take advantage of adaptive charging, which intelligently varies the amount of power the console sends to a connected controller in rest mode to charge it.
Apart from these headline additions, the September 2024 PS5 firmware update also includes some useful ancillary features, such as per-profile Remote Play settings and individual license restoration. Moreover, links to parties can now be shared by players who are in them, which is yet anotherhelpful feature for multiplayer enthusiasts on PS5.
