Originally released in late 2000, the PS2 was Sony’s second home console, arriving six years after the original PlayStation. Not only was the PS2 the system that launched beloved series such asKingdom HeartsandDevil May Cry, but it also included backward compatibility with most PS1 titles and peripherals, and the ability to play music CDs and DVD movies. Although the PS2 has been discontinued since 2013, and several of its hit titles have since been remastered for modern platforms, that has not stopped fans from both fondly remembering Sony’s top-selling console, and from collectingrare and expensive PS2 titlessuch asBully Collector’s EditionandSilent Hill: Shattered Memories.
With the PS2 still beingthe top-selling console of all time, the memories made by it linger in the hearts of gamers today. A Reddit user named this-guy-is-lit shared a screenshot on the r/playstation subreddit of their customized PS5 made to look as close to the original PS2 as possible. The PS5 console used for this project was the slim revision released in late 2023, which originally came with a white exterior shell on both sides of the unit. In the screenshot provided by this-guy-is-lit, the PS5 Slim had a black exterior instead. As for the customizations, a PS2-inspired PS5 script was added to the top side of the unit, with the logo colored pink, purple, and light green as a reference to the PlayStation controller’s symbol buttons.

The PS2’s signature PlayStation logo, which could rotate to match the console’s orientation, was added to the PS5 Slim between the USB ports and the Power and Reset buttons. However, the PS5’s added PlayStation logo was not rotatable, since it was attached with adhesive tape. The customized PS5 was placed next to an original PS2 console as a point of comparison. In response, users thanked this-guy-is-lit for their contribution, and some fans stated that their customized PS5 was a fitting tribute tothe 30th Anniversary of the PlayStationbrand.
With Sony and other developersremaking more PS2 classics on modern systems, it is clear that Sony’s second console remains number one in gamers' hearts. Only time will tell if Sony has plans to observe the PS2’s 25th anniversary in 2025.
