Game Rant’s review of the USPTO database indicates that Nguyen was insteadserved a notice of abandonmentin mid-January 2024, which officially saw him lose theFlappy Birdtrademark. New Jersey company Gametech Holdings filed to secure the trademark after it fell out of use. According to a recent report from IGN, Gametech then sold the IP to The Flappy Bird Foundation.
Flappy Bird Creator Says He Doesn’t Support Crypto
Nguyen concluded his September 15 tweet by asserting that he does not support crypto. This was likely a reference to the fact that the newFlappy Birdwas envisioned as adecentralized Web3 game, powered by the Solana blockchain platform. This is according to an older version of the project’s website that was pulled around the time of its official announcement, but not before being cached. An investigation by crypto news outlet Protos revealed that this older website also referenced a “$FLAP Token” that’s planned to be launched as part of Telegram’s blockchain to allow basic cryptocurrency features like free token airdrops and staking options.
The current version of the project’s website still contains a link to its Telegram channel, but no longer references any individualblockchain technology. It is currently unclear whether this means that the plans to makeFlappy Birda Web3 game with its own tokens have been abandoned.
The Flappy Bird Foundation, for its part, said that its upcoming game will first launch for web browsers by late October 2024 before making its way to Android and iOS devices in 2025. Seeing howblockchain technology has long been a fairly controversial topic among gamers, the idea ofFlappy Bird’s comeback centering on it could deter some fans of the original game from trying out its would-be successor.
