Marvel Snap’s Rules Are Made to Be Broken

In an average match, energy costs allow players to use their most powerful cards during their final two turns. This is meant to give the game a relatively fast pace, and has significantly helped to make the game more accessible to learn. However, popular cards such as Magik or Sera can do plenty to break therules ofMarvel Snap.

Kang the Conquerer is a five-cost card with zero power, and his card text reads as follows: “On Reveal: Look at what your opponent did, then restart the turn. (without this)”. At first glance,Kang the Conqueror’s ability seems more brokenthan any other card inMarvel Snap. Despite this appearance, a number of caveats hold Kang back from reaching his true potential.

Marvel Snaplargely revolves around control and prediction, so seeing an opponent’s turn before a player makes their own move sounds like a game changer. However, Kang’s ability allows the opponent to make adjustments as well, meaning his ability to lock an opponent’s actions or read their deck is outclassed by Daredevil and Cable respectively. There are plenty of cards that achieve better effects for less energy, meaning Kang needs a serious overhaul to keep up.

Marvel Snap’s cards are organized by series, also referred to as pools. This system was first meant to simply classify eras of card releases, but has since been realigned to more closely represent a card’s rarity and power within the game. In this new system, cards occasionally drop from one series to another to aid the evolving meta. There is a subcategory within Series 5, the highest order of cards, which is aptly referred to as the “Big Bads”.

Big Bads are considered the strongest cards inMarvel Snap. Thanos and High Evolutionary define entire decks, while Galactus can be game-winning in his own right. Developers have stated that Big Bads will never drop from Series 5. If that really is the case, then Kang demands a rework more than any other card in the game. It’s one thing for a card to be unimpressive if it could be dropped into lower tiers, but any so-called big bad has no business being as nigh-unusable as Kang.

Kang the Conquerer Desperately Needs a Buff

Developers could allow Kang to see unrevealed locations and change them at will, or even affect the power of other cards. For a more significant buff, Kang could draw a card in addition to resetting the turn. This would help players cycle through their deck faster, and play their best effects much earlier. While that may make Kang overpowered, it’s certainly closer to the developer’s vision than his current state.

Kang the Conquerer’s lackluster ability makes him a worse inclusion in a player’s deck than almost any other five-cost card, and it certainly holds him back from keeping up with the other Big Bads.Marvel Snap’s take on Kang the Conquereris comic accurate to his abilities, but doesn’t truly capture his power. Kang has almost always been one of the least played cards in the game, and remains in need of a major buff in order to have the impact that developers so clearly intend for him.
