Baldur’s Gate 3will receive a new update soon in the form of Patch 7. This patch, which is most likely the last major content update that Larian Studios will provide the game before the team starts work on its next project, recently began beta testing and is set to release this month.
SinceBaldur’s Gate 3launched last year, Larian Studios has continued releasing large updates that polish preexisting content and make notable additions to this already monumental RPG. Patch 7 will continue this trend and, while the full list of patch notes has yet to be revealed, Larian has already teased several ways that Patch 7 will switch up the game. These include UI tweaks, combat changes for Honor Mode, and the addition of a bard companion. Plus, one new ending being added offers a big change for one character’s narrative and gives them command overD&D’s most iconic monster: a red dragon.
How Patch 7 Could Be Lae’zel’s Saving Grace
Origin characters inBaldur’s Gate 3— functioning as either playable protagonists or recruitable companions — are each complex characters that have garnered a fanbase of their own. However, some origin characters have proven to be less popular than others. In addition to being an often ignored companion, Larian Studios releasedBaldur’s Gate 3player statson Jul 14, 2025, revealing Lae’zel as the least-played origin character. Despite her lack of popularity, Patch 7 could encourage players to try out her storyline in their next playthrough.

What to Expect from Lae’zel’s New Dragon-Focused Ending
Ahead of Patch 7’s release, Larian unveiled part of a cutscene for a Lae’zel-specific ending being added in the update. The cutscene shows Lae’zel at Baldur’s Gate following the final battle with the Absolute. Lae’zel then summons and tames a red dragon — a creature shown to have a powerful bond with the Gith inBaldur’s Gate 3’s opening cinematic.
The fighter then hops aboard the dragon and departs the titular city, accompanied by other Gith dragon riders as well as a fleet of nautiloids. As this occurs, the game’s narrator states that Lae’zel knows “there is no such thing as loyalty to a lie,” and that “a good Githyanki fights all her life for the right to return home.”
While it’s unknown what a player will need to do to achieve this new ending, the impact it could have onLae’zel’s storylineis massive. The teaser shows that she has not only gained allies among the Gith but that she has also seemingly taken control of the Absolute’s mind-flayer army. One can also infer from the narration that Lae’zel is using the nautiloids and her dragon allies to ignite a rebellion on the Astral Plane against the Githyanki queen Vlaakith.
Why Laezel’s New BG3 Ending is a Big Deal
This ending has the potential to give Lae’zel some much-needed agency in her own narrative. Though a strong and determined character, Lae’zel’s adherence to Gith customs sees her regularly bend the knee to otherGithyanki characterslike Vlaakith, Kith’rak Voss, and Orpheus. This Patch 7 ending would instead allow her to break free from these expectations, become a leader in her own right, and challenge her Gith comrades to evolve as she has throughout the game’s story.
Giving Lae’zel control over a red dragon should be a draw in its own right. While the extent to which this dragon will be featured has yet to be confirmed, Patch 7 could see Lae’zel use her newfound ally outside this cutscene as well. With the dragon appearing in the game’s final act, having the option to summon the creature during the battle against the Absolute — similarly to other allies like Dame Aylin and the owlbear — would be a great way to show off Lae’zel’s new ability and inject some needed dragon content into the game.
For those still hesitant about a Lae’zel-centric run ofBaldur’s Gate 3, there’s another reason to give this new ending a look. Other endings in the game allow the player to either side with or take control over the Absolute, but this Patch 7 path is the first to not result in an overtly evil ending. The ramifications of this new ending on not only Lae’zel but the narrative as a whole are sure to help it stand apart from the already numerousBaldur’s Gate 3endings.
