This year’s Call of Duty NEXT event has been just as impressive as the last few annual showcases. From content creators playing through live matches ofCall of Duty: Black Ops 6’s multiplayer mode, to tons of new information and footage of the new Zombies Liberty Falls map, to a major announcement about the future ofCall of Duty: Warzone, this year’s Call of Duty NEXTgave fans plenty to talk about.

Tying in with the release ofCall of Duty: Black Ops 6,Call of Duty: Warzoneis getting a new Resurgence map this October called Area 99. The concept behind this map is that players will drop onto the island where the original Nuketown was created. Players will be battling through mannequin manufacturing facilities, missile testing silos, shipping yards transporting Nuketown houses, and a slew of other POIs that all take the original Nuketown’s general vibe and expand on it. But Nuketown isn’t the only classicCall of Duty: Black Opsmap that’s being referenced with Area 99.

Call of Duty: Warzone’s Area 99 Map Pays Homage to Black Ops 2’s Pod

Call of Duty: Black Ops 2’s Pod Map Explained

Introduced inCall of Duty: Black Ops 2’s Apocalypse DLC, Pod may not be the most iconic multiplayer map inCall of Dutyhistory, but it does have a unique premise. According to the map’s official description, Pod sees players engaging in close-quarters firefights in a dilapidated residential area that was created in the 1970s as a futuristic, utopian living space. Set on an abandoned cliffside in Taiwan, Pod is named after the eponymous prefab shelters that litter the map.

Gameplay-wise,Call of Duty: Black Ops 2’s Pod mapis remembered for its frantic close-quarters combat, with players being funneled down two short routes. The northern route sees players using the two opposing Pods as strategic camping spots and chokeholds, while the southern route has players dashing across the cliffside, being careful to avoid the fatal drop into the water at the center of the map.

How Call of Duty: Warzone’s Area 99 Map Is Referencing Pod

Call of Duty: Black Ops 2’s Pod makes a triumphant return inCall of Duty: Warzone’s upcoming Area 99 Resurgence map, with there being a sizable POI that bears an extremely similar name and is seemingly modeled after the classic map.Call of Duty: Warzone’s Area 99 “Pods” point of interest contains a set of structures that each hold a handful of Pod prefab shelters. These Pods look almost identical to those found in theBlack Ops 2map, and the tree-like structure they all hang from is very similar to the ones that can be spotted in the 2012 map.

It seems as thoughCall of Duty: Warzone’s version of Podwill offer some similar vantage points to its 2012 counterpart, with its shelters offering interior exploration as well. The interior design ofWarzone’s Pods also clearly takes inspiration from theBlack Ops 2map, with stark tiling on the floors, bare walls, and minimal furnishings inside. It might be a useful strategy for players to set up camp in one of these Pods and let enemy teams come to them, though that tactic might not work too well in the more fast-paced Resurgence mode the map belongs to.
