Odyssey Interactive is best known for the free-to-play Steam hitOmega Strikers, a 3v3 arena game with colorful characters and gameplay reminiscent of Nintendo’sMario Strikers. Despite it carving out its own niche, thetiming ofOmega Strikers' launch was unfortunate.Omega Strikerslaunched right when fatigue for the live-service model was at its worst for gamers, with Odyssey’s game being unable to stand out among bigger properties in the space. Updates forOmega Strikerseventually slowed down, with its final character being added in October 2023. Odyssey is taking theOmega Strikersproperty and retooling it intoByte Breakers, a newSuper Smash Bros.-esque title with most of the same cast.
Odyssey first revealedByte Breakerson September 11, with a public playtest opened on Steam on September 12. It features the sameplatform fighter gameplay of theSuper Smash Bros.series, where players have to stay atop the platforms and survive being knocked off. The key difference is its incorporation of the battle royale genre, where it can support up to 40 players at once. Players have to be the last team standing, utilizing a variety of items, team assists, and power-ups that can spawn during a match.

Variouscharacters fromOmega Strikersare present in the roster ofByte Breakers, such as Nao, Ai. Mi, Juliette, and Luna, just to name a few. The developers ofByte Breakersnote that this is a very early prototype and playtest version of the game. Players are invited to try it out as it is right now, in order to get as much feedback as possible and to see ifByte Breakersis on the “right” track for them.
Byte Breakers Playtest Schedule (September 12-16):
Byte Breakersis running its open playtest to anyone on Steam, with its servers being turned on at 9 am PT and turned off at 3 am PT each morning. The playtest will run throughout the weekend, from September 12-16, 2024. As such, no release date has been set for Odyssey’s newest title just yet. Time will tell ifByte Breakerscan make a name for itself among theotherSuper Smash Bros.-esque gamesout right now.
