Why is Deku Obsessed with Quirks?

As a Quirkless Boy, He Can’t Help But Admire Those With Quirks

Midoriya Izuku has always liked and obsessed with Quirks, even from a young age when he first saw Bakugo Katsuki’s Quirk awakening at four years old. Deku was first introduced to Quirks when he witnessedBakugo Katsuki’s Explosion Quirk, which first appeared in kindergarten.

Around this time, Deku became interested in All Might. Deku oftenwatched All Might’sdebut video as a young boy, as he heroically saved countless individuals from a huge disaster. Although All Might’s bravery was enough to mesmerize others, his cheerful personality also helped everyone believe they were safe.

Unfortunately for Deku, his mother believed he was a late bloomer when it came to his Quirk manifesting, thustaking him to a doctor. This was when Deku learned that he retained his two pinky toe joints, making him Quirkless and part of the twenty percent of the humanity of those without a Quirk. Deku likely developed an obsession with Quirks from this point forward, as he was without one.

This was also when Deku grew obsessed with Heroes. In Episode One, Deku is seen providing commentary on a nearby battle in which Kamui and Mount Lady are engaged. He can also be seen heading to the front of the crowd to get a better look at the battle. After the battle, Deku is seen with a notebook that has taken extensivenotes about Mount Lady’s Quirk.

These analyses would soon become essential to Deku’s abilities when he becomes a Hero. Deku has an innate understanding of how Quirks work orhow a Quirk would workbest for an individual. At the start of the series, Deku’s Quirk analyses are a way for Deku to train himself to become a hero. At the age of 14 years old, Deku already had 13 notebooks labeled “For the future, Hero Analysis.” It was likely also a means he used to cope with being born Quirkless.

Throughout the series, Deku often brandished a notebook from the back of his pants, furious writing notes about his One For All Quirk or his classmate’s Quirks. While Deku’s passion for Quirks could have stemmed from being Quirkless, he has grown to enjoy learning about new Quirks genuinely.

How does Deku use Quirks to the best of their abilities?

Deku’s Admiration for Quirk Helps Them Shine to the Best of Their Abilities

As mentioned above, Deku’s passion for Quirk stems from being Quirkless, before he received One For All from All Might. It was previously believed that One For All was a power-based Quirk that would give the wielder immense strength. However, it was soon discovered that many other Quirks also reside within One For All.

As a result, Deku, who had once been Quirkless, now had an arsenal of Quirks he needed to learn and master before the battlewith All For Oneand Shigaraki Tomura. Deku had already been at a disadvantage when it came to Quirk training. This disadvantage was due to many of the other students already understood how their Quirks worked and how to use them to their best abilities.

Unfortunately for Deku, he only received the Quirk One For All when he was 15. Because he received this Quirk late, Deku had to learn to develop his unique fighting style, which took several trials and errors. To assist him with this, he took a variety of techniques from his mentor, All Might, and used them in battle, altering them to fit his needs as he had yet to control One For All fully.

In addition to this, he also looked at several of his classmates' fighting styles, including Bakugo Katsukiand Asui Tsuyu. As Deku unlocked more Quirks, he acquired several classmates, including Uraraki Ochacoand Sero Hanta, who assisted him with training. With newfound knowledge provided to Deku by All Might and with the help of his classmates during training, Deku can use his new Quirks efficiently. However, he sometimes struggles to control them due to One For All.

The way he admires each and every Quirk makes One For All shine much brighter.

During the Final War and against the battle with Tomura Shigaraki, Deku is met with the decision to transfer One For All to Shigaraki, a plan given to him by Kudo, the second One For All wielder. Without hesitation, Deku leaps into action; although his body is still reeling fromthe recoil of Gearshift, he uses the Blackwhip Quirk to make his body move. In the following attack,Deku uses Smokescreento block Shigaraki’s vision, knowing he would be searching for Deku, using another Quirk in his arsenal.

However, Deku’s strategic thinking allowed him to create a delayed surprise attack with this method in Chapter 414. However, this was only due to Deku’s innate knowledge of the Quirks within him that allowed him to make the Quirks within One For All shine brighter and work in a way that suited him best.
