What happened to Todoroki Rei?

Rei’s marriage was not always as tumultuous in the beginning

Todoroki Rei is the wife of Todoroki Enji and the mother of Shoto, Natsuo, Fuyumi, and Toya, who was later learned to be Dabi. Rei was previously from a family of Frost Quirk users called the Himura. Due to her ability to freely manipulate Ice, Rei was chosen to become Enji’s wife. In Season 6, Episode 17 of the series, Rei admits that her options for marriage are limited. As a result,Rei agreed to a Quirk Marriage with Enji, believing that she would be able to find love within the marriage.

However, although Rei had hope that the marriage would work out, Enji’s determination to produce a child with both their Quirks would result in the failure of their marriage and many of the children being traumatized by their father. Inherently, Rei knew thatQuirk Marriages were frowned upon within society; however, she still married Enji for the sake of the Himura family, which had lost their prestige.

Rei and Enji lived a happy life with Toya, Natsuo, and Fuyumi at the start of their marriage. However, Enji’s desperationto surpass All Mightcontinued to surge as they continued to have more children. Before the birth of Shoto, Enji had lightly accepted that he might not produce achild with both Fire and Ice Quirks, and at the time, had slowly given up on this dream, however, in the hope that he would produce a child with both Quirks, he chose to have more children.

However, once Shoto was born, Enji neglected and abused his family, showing favoritism toward Shoto and beginning to argue with Rei about Toya. Toya had always wanted to be like Enji, to become a Pro Hero and follow in his father’s footsteps. However, his Fire Quirk and weak body made that impossible, resulting in his presumed death, which led the family to break apart.

While Enji was not the only one at fault, his anger towards his family led Rei to become terrified of him and what he could do. Rei always had a submissive personality, following Enji’s leadership in the household. While she did attempt to stop Toya from acting out, his personality had grown too much like his father’s, leaving her unable to speak up against her own young son.

At one point, Rei became so terrified of Enji that looking at Shoto’s red hair led her to throw boiling water at him, making his iconic scar on the left side of his face. As a result of her mental instability, Rei was placed in a psychiatric hospital to seek help, as being around Enji led her to become cruel to her children unknowingly.

At the hospital, Shoto would visit her often or write letters when he could not visit. Additionally, Natsuo and Fuyumi would also visit when they could. While Enji had not visited her at the hospital, he did remember her favorite flowers and would gift them to her as a means of apology and reconciliation. However, after the Dabi revealed himself to be Todoroki Toya, she would find the strength to assist her family.

Did Rei Overcome Her Previous Trauma?

While not fully healed, Rei takes the first step of accountability

Although Rei is strong-willed and has confronted Enji about their wrongdoings, she admits she was not able to overcome her trauma. Rei is still dealing with the abuse she faced from Enji; however, in Chapter 301, she admits she’s not okay, but that’s also why she is confronting her trauma.

Okay? No, I’m not. That’s why I’m here.

It’s likely due to the time spent away from Enji that Rei was able to be more of herself and heal from what happened during their marriage. It’s possible that Rei has always been strong-willed, unlike the submissiveness seen at the start of their marriage. However, due to her family situation, she might have kept her feelings to herself for the sake of making her marriage work.

However, after learning that Toya was still alive and now lived undera new alias called Dabi, it’s possible her maternal instincts kicked in. Thus, she could make the appropriate moves to right the wrongs within her family. In Chapter 302, Rei fully admits the fault in her previous actions and takes full responsibility for her role as a mother.

During the Final War, in Chapter 387, Rei realizes that Toya and Enji are about to burn to death. As an Ice Quirk user, Rei quickly travels to the battlefield to cool down Toya’s explosive flames. Accompanying her are Fuyumi, Natsuo, and later Shoto, who help put out Toya’s flames. After the Final War, in Chapter 426, Rei and the rest of the family can be seen with scars on their face after the battle with Toya. She is seen pushing Enji’s wheelchair aftervisiting Toya at the Hospital. So, while Rei may still be dealing with some of the effects of her previous trauma, she is working towards bettering herself for her family.

My Hero Academia

Cast

In My Hero Academia, some humans have superpowers called quirks. Izuku Midoriya, nicknamed Deku, is not one of them. Deku has always idolized heroes like the number one hero, All Might, and since he was a child, he has always wanted to be a hero. However, his lack of a quirk has always held him back, but a chance encounter with All Might after discovering a classmate in danger sets Deku on the path to becoming a true hero. My Hero Academia centers around Deku and a class of heroes-in-training at UA. This school shapes young quirk users into future heroes through fake rescue missions, combat training, and other hero-tempering tasks. With young Deku inheriting the “One-For-All” quirk, he will learn what it means to be a true hero while facing off with dastardly supervillains.
