Summary

Minecraftis finally getting itself a movie, but the film’s new trailer isn’t meeting fan expectations. Despite a poor reception from players and commentators, though,Minecraft’s movie can at least fall back on one element from the game.

A Minecraft Moviehas, at last, been unveiled—but to scarce applause. The film shows live-action characters breach an uber-realisticMinecraftworld, one where cubic creatures have skin and fur textures dialed up tenfold. This uncanny concoction has been seen as dated by many, especially in the face of fully-animated adaptations like the blockbuster show-stopperThe Super Mario Bros. Movie. Moreover, though Jack Black is widely beloved, his look in the film isn’t particularly reminiscent of Steve. Still, the very nature ofMinecraftgives the film a better chance to thrive.

Minecraft’s Movie Could Really Benefit From The Game’s Live-Service Elements

Safe to say,Minecraftis lagging behind franchises likeMario,Sonic, and evenAngry Birdswhen it comes to cinematic reception. Things could change when the film releases, of course, but many fans don’t count on it. Fortunately forA Minecraft Movie, it will always have the advantage ofMinecraft’s live service elements. Unlike most games that get the silver screen treatment (often older titles that continue to release new entries),Minecraftis an ever-evolving game—setting up some great integration opportunities.

How A Minecraft Movie Could Change The Game

When the opportunity does arise for a game to be updated in tandem with its film, the opportunity is usually taken.Pokémon Go, which included content to coincide withDetective Pikachu, is a good example—and Mojang will probably follow in its footsteps. That game saw a related event and some new cosmetics, content Mojang will likelyrelease throughMinecraft’s Marketplace. It’s very possible that the movie will see a tie-in skin pack and adventure map, which have become highly prolific on Bedrock edition (roping in IPs likeStar Wars,Spongebob, andAvatar).

Core content updates is a different question. The recent announcement thatMinecraftis changing to smaller updates(with multiple throughout the year) makes a movie-based content drop more likely, but players shouldn’t count on it. The current design direction is unlikely to be meddled with for the sake of cross promotion, especially considering possible incongruities (such as piglins surviving the overworld). Still, a movie is a big deal forMinecraft, so title screen changes, new splash text, and even in-game Easter eggs could go ahead.

Minecraft Legends And A Minecraft Movie Both Forecast A New Direction

On the other hand, it’s possible that there could be some tangentially related changes. This is evidenced by howA Minecraft Movieis following inthe footsteps ofMinecraft Legends, with both making use of piglins as the main enemy faction. SinceMinecraft Legendsprobably had a longer lifespan ahead of itself, it’s probable that it could also have been updated with the movie. Even if that game’s support has been shelved, there’s a clear unity here: both suggest a shared artistic direction, one that could translate into the main game. Through these means, there could very well be some movie content that appears in vanillaMinecraft.

On the other hand,Minecraftis, again, constantly changing. Few could have predicted how much Mojang would delve into ancient builder lore with Trails and Tales and Tricky Trials, with the latter in particular forming an aesthetic shift. Since the movie andLegendslikely have shared DNA,A Minecraft Movie’s lore may be a holdover—just as its design direction echoes prior movie adaptations of videogames. Regardless,Minecraft’s switch to smaller updates means that, if the direction presented inA Minecraft Movieis popular, Mojang can easily pivot if it wishes. Beyond that, if the film is successful, sequels will constantly get new content to adapt throughMinecraft’s regular updates, allowing for a symbiotic relationship between the game and its big-screen counterpart.
