Summary

One of the most underappreciated aspects ofOne Pieceis fashion,as author Eiichiro Oda has proved to be very talented at designing different good-looking outfitsfor his characters to wear, especially considering that the Straw Hat Pirates change clothes in almost every arc.

As the character with the most appearances, protagonistMonkey D. Luffyhas one of the largest collections of clothes inOne Piece, and it becomes even bigger when the anime, movies, and video games are also taken into account. Luffy may not be the most fashionable character, but he definitely has a fun sense of style. So, what are his absolute best outfits?

8Film: Red (Second Outfit)

It’s not uncommon for non-canon material to introduce numerous changes of clothes for the Straw Hat Pirates, andOne Piece Film: Redis no exception. When Luffy and his crew decide to fight Tot Musica during the movie’s climactic final battle, they all change into a collection of outfits that seem to be based on Heavy Metal culture, which is quite fitting for the prominent musical theme of this film.

Out of all of them, Luffy is the definite standout: his clothes achieve that perfect balance between a pirate captain and a Heavy Metal enthusiast. The classic bicorne hat, coupled with the leather jacket and the low-cut shirt with a Jolly Roger printed on it, looks wonderful on him. Although it’s unfortunate that, as always, he gradually gets rid of his clothes as the epic fight goes on.

Futuristic & Nostalgic At The Same Time

The recentEgghead Arcis set in the so-called “Future Island” so, as expected, it’s filled to the brim with futuristic clothing. Thanks to one of Vegapunk’s many automatic dispensers, Luffy gets to dress up for the occasion, making him perfectly fit inthis location that is defined by its retro-futuristic style.

Red has always been his signature color, so he always looks great in it, but the big coat and bulky antigravity boots make it all work really well. Overall, this appearance makes Luffy look a lot like Astro Boy, so this is most likely a subtle nod to that genre-defining series.

6Original Outfit / Post-Timeskip Outfit

2 Outfits That Defined An Entire Generation Of Anime Fans

Every time anime & manga fans think of Monkey D. Luffy, he will definitely be wearing either of these two outfits when he pops up in their minds. They can’t be blamed though, because these are undoubtedly his most iconic clothes. His original outfit, worn during most of theEast Blue Saga, is so simple yet so effective, as it reflects Luffy’s signature childlike innocence, not to mention that he always looks great in red.

But hisPost-Timeskipoutfit is just as recognizable, especially because it feels like the natural evolution of the other, with an open vest that displays the chest scar he got after his encounter with Akainu during the War on Marineford. The new yellow sash on his waist is also a good touch, as it is a common piece of clothing worn by many prominent pirates in theOne Pieceworld.

5Strong World (Third Outfit)

Looking Like A Mafia Boss Who Wants To Rescue His Navigator

One Piece Film: Strong Worldisa really solid film that basically turns into an action-packed mafia storyin its third act. In an exciting scene, the Straw Hat Pirates invade Shiki’s criminal meeting and immediately attack his allies in order to rescue Nami. And they all look excellent while doing it, especially Luffy.

The black suit, the black coat, and the giant gun make him look extremely intimidating, which is definitely intentional, as at this point Luffy is set on getting his beloved friend back. Underneath his suit, he’s also wearing a beautiful red shirt, which can be seen later during the climactic final clash against Shiki.

Luffy activates Gear 2 and defeats Blueno.

4Enies Lobby Outfit

A Small Change Is Enough To Make It Standout

Over the course of the series, especially before the time skip, most of Luffy’s garbs were similar-looking vests and shorts of different colors. This is quite fitting for such a simple-minded character and, to the surprise of most fans, it works really well whenever he wears an outfit that manages to make an impact despite these similarities.

Luffy’s clothes during theEnies Lobby Arcare the perfect example of this occurrence, as the main difference is that he wears black shorts with bigger pockets. That small change not only makes him look excellent, but it was enough to turn this into a legendary outfit, since it was used when he revealed his Gear 2 techniqueand during the entirety of his intense fight against Rob Lucci.

Luffy and his mirror copies break out of Big Mom’s wedding cake.

3Tea Party Outfit

An Elegant But Intimidating Look That Big Mom Will Never Forget

One of Luffy’s most fascinating attires comes from the surprise attack on Big Mom’s Tea Party that takes place in the middle of theWhole Cake Island Arc. As this is quite a fancy event, Luffy and his friends wear elegant clothes in order to blend in, and he definitely has the better-looking one in the group.

The bright red suit not only fits his usual color scheme, but also makes him seem exceptionally fancy, and the addition of a black fedora on top of his usual straw hat is a fun final touch. However, when Luffy eventually fights Charlotte Katakuri in the Mirror World, he takes off his blazer to reveal a black shirt underneath. It’s not common for him to wear clothing with this color, but he certainly pulls it off as he looks really intimidating during this battle, especially when he reveals his new Snake Man transformation.

Luffy dresses up as Lucy during the Dressrosa Arc.

2“Lucy” Disguise / Corrida Colosseum Outfit

Works Both As A Funny Disguise And As A Fashionable Outfit

Luffy is not very good at hiding and going incognito, which makes the “Lucy” disguise that he wears at the beginning of theDressrossa Archilarious. The fake beard and sunglasses are really amusing, but the fact that he barely tries to hide his iconic straw hat makes it even funnier. However, he does end up growing into the outfit, seeing as it perfectly fits within the established culture of Dressrosa.

He eventually gets rid of the fake accessories and nonchalantly wears the remaining dark blue shirt with a flowered pattern during the climactic battle against Doflamingo. This is definitely one of his most recognizable attires that not only looks so good that many fans have claimed that they want a real-life version of said shirt, but that he also wore during the famous scenein which Luffy reveals Gear 4: Boundman for the first time.

Luffy and his crew get ready to enter Onigashima.

1Raid On Onigashima Outfit

The Attire Of A True Pirate King

Luffy had more than one good-looking change of clothes during theWano Country Arc,but the final outfit he uses during the Raid on Onigashima is the one that was cemented as one of his greatest looks, and for good reason. As previously mentioned, sometimes a bunch of minor changes are enough to make Luffy’s clothes stand out, and this is the best example of that.

Orange shorts, a purple sash, and, most important of all, a black coat that he uses as a cape. These elements elevate his Raid on Onigashima outfit and turn it into his best appearance in the entire series. With the help of this attire, Luffy finally looked and felt like a true Pirate King for the first time, which is most likely intentional, seeing as Kaido compares him to Gol D. Roger himself. And while it’s a shame that he eventually loses the coat during his climactic fight against Kaido, the fact that this is the outfit he was wearing when he unlocked his powerful Gear 5 form more than makes up for it.
