Summary
A reputable source has shared some exciting information regarding the reveal date of thePS5 Proand the rumored PlayStation State of Play this month. PlayStation fans have been waiting for a long time to learn more about thePS5 Proand the gaming giant’s roadmap of future first-party games, and their patience may soon pay dividends.
Compared to previous console generations, Sony has been rather quiet in recent years about the numerous projects it’s working on for the PS5. Prior to the console’s launch in holiday 2020, the company adopted State of Play and Showcase livestream formats, with the latter taking precedence for tentpole first-party game announcements. Naturally, then, PlayStation Showcases garner more hype, but their scheduling has been rather inconsistent over time. Many rumors pointed to aPlayStation Showcase in May 2024, but it turned out to be a State of Play that received mixed reactions.
PlayStation fans set their sights on September for the elusive 2024 Showcase, but arecent rumor suggested it could be a State of Playyet again. This prompted lots of speculation on whether Sony will abandon the Showcase format and solely use State of Plays to announce games big and small. It seems that may be the case, as reliable industry insider Lunatic Ignus corroborated the aforementioned rumorin their Discord channel, claiming that Sony will hold a “pretty big” State of Play on either September 19 or 20. This show will apparently have “first-party content” and a possible “world premiere,” which sounds quite significant.

September 2024 State of Play
However, the insider did note that this “world premiere” announcement could skip the upcoming State of Play and show up at the 2024 Game Awards this December. That’s not all, though, as Lunatic Ignus also hinted atthe heavily-leaked PS5 Profinally being announced next week on either Tuesday, September 10 or Wednesday, September 11. Given Sony’s past patterns, a Tuesday announcement seems likelier. A grain of salt is always advised whenever any rumors are involved, but it’s worth noting that Lunatic Ignus was one of the few insiders who accurately leaked the previous State of Play’s air date.
Interestingly, if the September State of Play is indeed as noteworthy as the insider claims, it may be announced alongside the PS5 Pro next week. Sony might reveal the hardware first, and then preview some brand-new and/or upgraded first-party games that take advantage of the PS5 Pro in the following week’s State of Play. These games and the PS5 Pro could then be shown off on the big stage atPlayStation’s Tokyo Game Show exhibitionat the end of September, making for a potentially very tantalizing month for PlayStation fans.
