Summary

Filming is underway onJurassic World: Rebirth, with the new sequel set to hit theaters in summer 2025. It’s a quick turnaround after theJurassic Worldtrilogy came to an end in 2022, with the initial thinking that the franchise would take a break. However, the success ofJurassic World: Dominionhas led to another sequel going into production. It appears that the latest sequel could be going back to its roots, witha storyline very similar to Steven Spielberg’s 1997 sequel,The Lost World: Jurassic Park, and as much as this movie wasn’t perfect, it had many elements which made it a hit with fans of the franchise.

Jurassic World: Rebirthwill focus on a completely new set of characters, withScarlett Johanssonplaying covert operations expert, Zora Bennett and Mahershala Ali as Duncan Kincaid, the leader of Zora’s team. The movie will be directed by Gareth Edwards, and interestingly,The Lost World’s screenwriter, David Koepp, will pen the script, which raises the possibility that the upcoming sequel could be a throwback to the first ever Jurassic Park sequel.

TheJurassic Worldtrilogy made a point of going in a new direction, while still paying tribute to what came before it in theoriginalJurassic Parktrilogy, and this was evident in the latest sequel,Jurassic World: Dominion, with thereturn of legacy characters, Dr Alan Grant (Sam Neill), Dr Ellie Sattler (Laura Dern) and Dr Ian Malcolm (Jeff Goldblum). It was an unexpected development when another sequel was announced, as the consensus was that the franchise would go into rest mode. However, ‘life finds a way’ and the summer of 2025 will bring the dinosaurs back to the big screen, andthe plot synopsis for the upcoming sequelhas a distinct vibe of Steven Spielberg’s first everJurassic Parksequel,The Lost World:

Five years after the events ofJurassic World Dominion, the planet’s ecology has proven largely inhospitable to dinosaurs. Those remaining exist in isolated equatorial environments with climates resembling the one in which they once thrived. The three most colossal creatures within that tropical biosphere hold the key to a drug that will bring miraculous life-saving benefits to humankind. Johansson plays skilled covert operations expert Zora Bennett, contracted to lead a skilled team on a top-secret mission to secure genetic material from the world’s three most massive dinosaurs. When Zora’s operation intersects with a civilian family whose boating expedition was capsized by marauding aquatic dinos, they all find themselves stranded on an island where they come face-to-face with a sinister, shocking discovery that’s been hidden from the world for decades.

Mahershala Ali as Duncan Kincaid

Scarlett Johansson’s character, Zora Bennett, sounds like a throwback to Julianne Moore’sLost Worldcharacter, Sarah Harding, with both characters leading a team of experts to obtain vital information from the dinosaurs on an island, and ending up stranded.Another common denominator is the return of screenwriter, David Koepp, who wrote the script for the originalJurassic Parkand its sequel,The Lost World.

Jurassic World: Rebirthwill be the first time Koepp has played a part in the franchise since the 1997 entry, and his influence could be vital to the success of the upcoming sequel.Rebirthcould be a throwback toThe Lost World, and that wouldn’t necessarily be a bad thing. The Lost Worldis the best Jurassic Park sequel, but it does have its faults. However,ifJurassic World: Rebirthcan iron out these issues, it could be the best sequel in the whole franchise.

The Lost World: Jurassic Park’s Worldwide Gross

Steven Spielberg had one of the biggest tasks of his career, crafting a sequel to his mega hit,Jurassic Park. While 1997’sThe Lost Worldwasn’t a perfect movie, and certainly not a patch on the original Dino caper, it is a respectable sequel, with a lot of the elements that made the original an instant classic.Sam Neill’s Dr Alan Grant didn’t return for the sequel, but his absence was filled by the return of Jeff Goldblum as Dr. Ian Malcolm, who maneuvered into the lead role.

Goldblum’s performance was superb, and the sequel also added some great supporting actors into the mix, including Julianne Moore as Sarah Harding, and Vince Vaughn in his first big role. There are some great action sequences, with the T-Rex rampage around San Diego still a delight to watch. IfJurassic World: Rebirthis as good asThe Lost World, it’s bound to be a success with fans.
