Guerrilla Games is currently stewardinga whopping 16Horizonprojects, which includes cross-media adaptations. Some fans have even cleverly deciphered some of these projects, such as aHorizonlive-service multiplayer game, MMO, TV adaptation,Forbidden Westsequel,Zero Dawnremaster, and, of course, the upcomingLEGO Horizon Adventures. Most of these projects are being handled by external studios, with Guerrilla supervising the process.
As far as internal development goes, work ontheHorizonmultiplayer gamehas been underway at Guerrilla for several years, alongside the third singleplayer installment followingHorizon Forbidden West. However, it seems thatHorizonfans specifically waiting for the latter might have to exercise some more patience, as credible industry insider Jason Schreier alleged in a recent Spawncast episode that Guerrilla will release theHorizonmultiplayer project first. The third single-playerHorizongame, meanwhile, is a “ways off.”
Sony May Be Very Confident in the Horizon Multiplayer Game
Schreier also remarked that Sony’s live-service push was “no joke,” and that theHorizonmultiplayer game is among the handful of live-service projects that survived cancelations. This could imply that Sony is quite confident in the game, but afterConcord’s disastrous commercial run, only time will tell how theHorizonmultiplayer project fares in the market. Given that this game has been in the works since 2018 at the least, it appears quite plausible that Guerrilla could be at the tail end of development right about now.
Horizon’s alluring world and hulking machine enemies are two of its best qualities, and the prospect of a multiplayer game that makes good use of them seems very promising. Previous rumors have also claimed that theHorizonmultiplayer project could even introduce bigger machines, so it could end up offering quite a distinctive experience compared to other live-service titles. Conversely, there’s also the question of post-launch support. Naughty Dog canceledThe Last of Us Onlinedue to the immense amount of resources required to support the live-service project after launch, so it’ll be interesting to see how Guerrilla plans to do the same for theHorizonmultiplayer game.
