One of anime’smost complex power systems, Hunter X Hunter’s Nen aura, does an even better job of being one of anime’s most cohesive power systems. Nen, in the literal sense, means “Mind Force,” which is a technique that allows a living being to use and manipulate their life energy directly. Nen is guided byfour major principlesand is classified into six types that offer uniquely different abilities. The focus of this piece, however, lies on the conjuration Nen type.
Conjuration Nen type focuses more on creating material constructs from a person’s aura. However, this is only what the conjuration Nen type is. Therefore, this piece is no more than a deeper dive into the mechanisms surrounding the Conjuration Nen type.
How Does The Conjuration Nen Type Work?
Principles Behind Conjuration Nen
As its name suggests, the Conjuration Nen type implies the ability to create using Nen. Conjuration is essentially creating physical and independent material objects made out of a person’s aura, with Kurapika’s chains being the most memorable fit for this description.
Due to being a creation type, users of the conjuration Nen type havean array of tricks and skillsat their disposal. They are capable of creating laws and principles that can affix the constructs they make to a specific area. Even more, they are also capable of creating personal pocket dimensions.
However, mastery of the conjuration Nen type requires the conjurer to do extreme amounts of visualization training, as this is the singular most important difference in the quality and control over constructs made by conjurers. By control, this means that once a conjurer has mastered the materialization of a certain construct, they can conjure and dispel such a construct instantly, regardless of where and when. Because they are constructs of pure Nen, conjuration is the only method to use Nen to create objects that non-nen users can physically interact with unless hidden from their senses with In.
Alternatively, Conjurers are also capable of creating abilities with constructs that are invisible to non-users. These constructs can go as far as possessing special abilities, like the Phantom Troupe’s Shizuku, who can conjure up a vacuum cleaner that can infinitely suck up objects, with the condition that it can not suck up living things and other things made with Nen. Some Conjurers can even change the length and size of materialized constructs.
Notably, conjured constructs, in certain situations and circumstances, have a relative sense of independence from the Conjurer due to being able to continue existing at a considerable distance from the Conjurer. Further, the durability of such a construct is typically an indication of the level of the conjurer’s skill. However, it is important to note that the six Nen-types are not rigid, as Nen-types can lean into one another, and each Nen-type is to varied extents compatible with the other Nen-types. For Conjuration, it is most compatible with Transmutation by 80% and least compatible with Emission by 40%.
Finally, Conjuration abilities tend to be specific and very complex, in addition to mostly being conditional. These conditions are usually imbued into the conjured constructs to make it more powerful, with a good example being Kurapika’s chains, specifically his binding chainthat has a condition of only being used against the Phantom Troupe, with a penalty of death should Kurapika break this condition. The condition resulted in the chain becoming strong to the point where Ugovin, a master Enhancer, could not break the chain.
How To Become a Conjurer
Steps Nen Users Need To Take
Becoming a Conjurer relies more on the user’s affinity to the Nen type, as it is with all other types, and has less to do with intentionally being willing to be a conjurer. The first, however, is to determine the aura type of the user, which, in this case, can be done in two ways. The most popular and generally known way is the Water Divination Test. The Divination requires the user to float a leaf on top of a glass of water. The user then places their hands around the glass and focuses an abnormal amount of aura into their hands, using the principles of Nen. For the Conjuration Nen type, the user is a Conjurer if impurities appear in the water.
The other and not-so-popular way to determine a person’s aura type isHisoka’s Personality Test, a Nen-type identification method created by Hisoka, who claims to be able to judge a person’s Nen-type based on their personality. He believes that every person of an aura type generally has the same personality. So, according to his theory, Conjurers are typically sensitive or high-strung, serious or even stoic. They are also mostly very cautious, which makes them unusually observant. Most importantly, they are usually rational and coolheaded, which mostly manifests in their training. So, according to Hisoka, a user with such characteristics is very likely to be a Conjurer.
Training to become a skilled Conjurer, according to Izunavi, begins with the Conjurer/ student deciding on whatever object they want to materialize. What follows is intense imagery training, where the conjurer is in contact with the object at every given moment, studying and perceiving it with all five senses and making mental pictures of the object. The training progresses when the conjurer begins to only dream about the intended object. The teacher then removes the object while the student continues the imagery training without the object. The student’s dreams gradually get replaced by hallucinations, which continue to get more real to overshadow the student’s major senses until the student unknowingly conjures the object. An important difference between a skilled conjurer and a master conjurer is simply the intensity and extremeness of the image training done by both.
Notable Users of Conjuration Nen Type
Kurapika:One of the series’ main characters, Kurapika is thelast surviving memberof the Kurta Clan, famously known for their Scarlet Eyes. As a Conjurer, Kurapika is one of the best in the field due to his ability to grasp the Nen-type relatively quickly. He is also one of the very few characters who can access all six Nen categories. He can incorporate elements of Emission, Manipulation, and Enhancement, all while also being proficient in Transmutation. While cool-headed and logical, he has a terrifying spirit of vengeance against members of the Phantom Troupe, as shown in his battle against Uvogin, whom he eventually kills.
Kite:Gon’s beloved mentor, Kite, was a hunter reborn as a Chimera Ant after dying at the hands of Neferipitou. As a hunter, Kite was a Conjurer with adual affinity to Transmutation. Having been a disciple of Ging Freecs, one of the world’s hunters, Kite is immensely powerful compared to the average hunter. As a conjurer, Kite was capable of an array of deadly constructs through his Nen ability called ‘Crazy Slots.’ The ability allowed him to conjure weapons in a roulette-type manner with a Nen Beast attached to it, which in this case is a Clown.
Kortopi:Member #12 of the Phantom Troupe, Kortopi was notablyphysically the weakestamong members of the Troupe and often very quiet but fiercely loyal to both the Troupe and its leader, Chrollo. As a Conjurer, Kortopi was exceptionally strong, with Kurapika impressed by his ability to materialize almost whole buildings out of his Nen. Though Kortopi was more of a support-type character due to unsuitability for battle, like the other Troupe members, Kortopi’s mimicking ability to instantly materialize anything he touched made him an indispensable part of the Troupe.
Shizuku Murasaki:Member #8 of the Phantom Troupe, Shizuku was alongside Kortopi, one of the physically weaker members of the Troupe. Unusually calm, Shizuku could be classified as soulless due to never showing emotion in any situation. A trait that makes her as inhumane as she is ordered to be. As a Conjurer, Shizuku is more skilled than the average Nen user. Her ability allows her to conjure up a vacuum cleaner that sucks up everything infinitely except living things and objects made of Nen.
Abengane:A former player of the game Greed Island, Abengane is one of the rarer conjurers. Cool-headed and intelligent, Abengane, as a conjurer, is extremely skilled in his natural affinity. His ability allows him to remove the effects of Nen from either himself or others, essentially qualifying him as an exorcist in this sense. However, his ability is not so common, as he is one of the very few capable of this in the series.
Other notable Conjurers from the series include Genthru, Hinrigh Biganduffno, Knuckle Bine, and Tsubone.
