The latest installment in theStreet Fighterseries,Street Fighter 6, is set to introduce one of the most iconic fighting game characters in Terry Bogard when an update drops on September 24. The protagonist of SNK’sFatal Furyseries has become a legend, taking on a life separate from his native franchise; widely recognizable by his red cap, jacket, and powerful hand-to-hand combat. Terry is practically the face of the franchise and is usually the first-choice character for publicity reps or crossovers like thisStreet Fighter 6collaboration.
To this point, it came as no surprise when, during Summer Game Fest 2024, the crossover between Capcom and SNK was first announced, which teased debuts for Mai Shiranui and Terry Bogard in the critically acclaimed fighting game. However, it wasn’t until Gamescom Opening Night Live that fans glimpsed Terry’s would-be representation inStreet Fighter 6.Based on previews ofSF6’s Terry Bogardat the event, he appears to have lost none of his endearing swag, since he is a near-identical version of hisFatal Furyiterations – from his taunts down to minute body movements and overall style.
Terry’s Character Design, Taunts, And Animations Make Him Feel Right At Home In Street Fighter
It’s not a new development for Capcom to lend characters to other franchises, but Terry’s introduction inStreet Fighter 6raised a few eyebrows. For starters, he’s the first character outside of the Capcom sphere to become playable in a mainlineStreet Fightergame, leading to concerns about whether the developers would nail his likeness. Injecting foreign talent into an established franchise can be tricky for even the most capable devs.
However, judging by the fluidity of Terry’s moves in glimpses,Street Fighter 6seems to have retained most of what makes his character tick. His move set is particularly eye-catching, as the modern standards of aStreet Fightertitle have brought his skills to an enhanced light, as Capcom sought to bring his iconic stance andSuper Arts like the Power Wave and Burn Knuckleup to speed without altering their traditional appearance.
Capcom’s Focus on Tradition with Terry Bogard Could Yield Dividends
The positives ofTerry Bogard’sStreet Fighter 6likenesshighlighted in the brief showcase extend beyond movement mechanics. Past SNK iterations outfitted him with a red cap and leather jacket, and in terms of mannerisms, he fought with a customary confident demeanor that endeared him to fans. That’s part of the trifecta that made Terry a legend: a simple yet classy style, and deadly fighting combinations.
Street Fighteras a franchise has unique animation and art styles, so it wouldn’t have been out of place for a few things to get some tweaks in their attempt to get things right. However, from all indications, Terry’s movements have been identical to those from theFatal Furygames, from throwing a punch to intricate details like taunts and even victory poses. In theFatal Furytitles, Terry was notably easy to use and was a popular choice for his smooth learning curve, and that’s an essential aspect of his character that seems to have carried over intoStreet Fighter 6. He remains an excellent mid-range option, closing down enemies with remarkable speed and using combos to full effect.
To further help with the launch campaign,Street Fighterrecently released Terry Bogard’s gameplay traileron YouTube for fans to get familiar with his animations and quirks. The similarities to hisFatal Furydays are near uncanny, and if he’s any indicator, fans of the franchise can expect something similar with Mai Shiranui when they make their appearance.
