In the world of strategy games, it’s rare that a sequel directly connects to the entry that came before it. Instead, many strategy game sequels focus on improving the gameplay formula started by its predecessor, and expanding the series' scope rather than connecting its story directly to the prior entry, such as inAge of Empires 4orCrusader Kings 3.Frostpunk 2, however, has many direct ties to the series' first entry.

Released six years after the first game,Frostpunk 2does expand on its predecessor’s formula in some significant ways, such as through features like the Council Hall and the implementation of Districts and a swathe of new building types. ButFrostpunk 2isn’t afraid to embrace its predecessor’s story where possible, and long-time series fans will surely notice a slew of connections between both games.

Frostpunk 2’s Connections to The First Game Explained

Frostpunk 2’s Opening Cinematic Reveals The Fate of The First Game’s Player-Character

Frostpunk 2’s connections to the original 2018 game begin the moment the player boots up the campaign for the first time, and a cinematic begins to play. Players are confronted by an image of an old man in a wheelchair, accompanied by a shaky voiceover that recaps the Great Frost and some of the events of the first game. It’s revealed that this old man is the Captain of New London, the firstFrostpunk’s player-character. The intro cinematic ends with an abrupt cut to the Captain outside in the cold, dead.

Frostpunk 2 Asks Players to Choose Faith or Order Once Again

DuringFrostpunk 2’s prologue, players take control of a group of Frostland wanderers seeking shelter in an abandoned Land Dreadnought. As players scramble to stockpile food for the impending whiteout, they come across a body in the snow whose uniform depicts an intriguing symbol. According to the in-game prompt, some of the group believe this symbol probably denotes a religion, while others think it’s some kind of military insignia. Players are asked to choose what organization they think the symbol indicates.

This is a reference to one ofFrostpunk’s most important choices, with players being asked in the first game to keep people in line through either Faith or Order. Choosing a path inFrostpunk 2will shape the type of New London that players encounter after the prologue.

Frostpunk 2 Features Some Familiar Locations

AfterFrostpunk 2’s prologue, players assume the role of a Steward who was allegedly hand-picked by the dying Captain to take over leadership duties of New London. For the rest of the duration ofFrostpunk 2’s campaign, players continue to lead New London through the cold, just as they did in the first game. It’s also made clear that it’s been 30 years since the events of the firstFrostpunk’s Great Storm.

While New London has survived for three decades, its coal reserves are quickly depleting, its all-important generator has gone offline, and the city is suffering from major overpopulation issues. It’s up to the player’s Steward to fix these issues and make New London an even greater city than it was before. Without spoiling too much,Frostpunk 2’s campaign also references some other familiar locations from the first game, though players will need to wait until Chapter 3 for that particular piece of fan-service.

We use a post-apocalyptic setup to tell a meaningful story about human ambition. Because ultimately, what can end us is not nature itself – it’s human nature.”NAVIGATE BETWEEN FACTIONS AS A STEWARD As the City grows, creating and passing new laws becomes a more complex matter.
