Hollow Knight: Silksong, though obfuscated by an air of mystery, is expected to improve upon what came before it.WithSilksonghaving a different protagonist, a new setting, and, theoretically, a radically different approach to core game mechanics, there are a number of ways that Team Cherry can meet these high expectations, taking what worked in the first game and experimenting with them.

Hornet taking center stage inHollow Knight: Silksongis likely going to have the biggest impact on the game, insofar as it distinguishes itself from its predecessor. Compared to The Knight of the first game, Hornet is quicker and more versatile, with an almost ballerina-like grace that informs both her locomotion and combat abilities.Silksong’s approach to gameplay probably won’t be a complete reinvention of the first game’s, but this new protagonist warrants significant changes to several important mechanics, which would solidify Hornet as a unique character in her own right, rather than just an offshoot of her sibling.

How Hollow Knight: Silksong Can Play with the Overcharm Mechanic

The Overcharmed System Deepens Hollow Knight’s Gameplay

The charm system is amongHollow Knight’s most satisfyingprogression mechanics, allowing players to mix-and-match different perks and game-changing buffs, adding a layer of strategy and forethought to the Metroidvania gameplay loop. The primary mitigating factor in this system comes in the form of charm notches: each charm costs a certain number of notches, and the number of notches that players have available increases as they explore the world.

Naturally,Hollow Knight’s best charms cost several notches, while more minor charm effects can require as little as a single notch.

But the perceptive player may discover a way around this limitation. If, for instance, a player has one remaining charm slot but they attempt to equip a charm that costs three notches, they will be unable to do so. However, making this attempt five times will allow the player to equip the three-notch charm in the single-notch spot. This will incur the Overcharmed status effect, which doubles damage dealt to the player. Ultimately, this trade-off rewards those looking toget creative withHollow Knight’s build-craftingoptions, offering a pliable risk-reward framework to engage with.

How Hollow Knight: Silksong Can Get More Mileage Out of the Overcharm Mechanic

Silksong’s version of charms will probably be markedly different fromHollow Knight’s, but the Overcharm mechanic could still live on in spirit. For instance, if Hornet can activate buffs through certain pieces of gear, then perhaps over-equipping gear could cause certain drawbacks while still providing the relevant advantages. A good parallel for this would beDark Souls' armor weight system, which lets players trade mobility and agility for increased defense or poise.

That’s not to say thatSilksongshould just copy this system, but offering players a similar trade-off could work wonders. Maybe over-equipping Hornet could result in the under-powering of certain moves, or a persistent status effect that corresponds to the over-clocked piece of gear (e.g. an item that allows Hornet to deal poison damage could slowly poison her). Crucially, this system should build offHollow Knight’s Overcharm mechanic by letting players stack both the negative effects and the positive ones, adding extra layers to the risk-reward system andraising the ceiling onSilksong’s build variety.

The potential benefits of doubling-down on the Overcharm system are myriad, but it’s worth noting the positive impact such a decision could have on replay value and player expression. One ofthe best parts about replayingHollow Knightis the chance to experiment with different Charm combinations, and allowing for deeper experimentation, with appropriate difficulty scaling via drawbacks, could reward mastery while elevating the base challenge, flinging open the doors to incredible variety and longevity.
