Hogwarts Legacy’s main selling point is its status as the ultimateHarry Potterfantasy. Based onHogwarts Legacy’s sales numbers, it’s fulfilling that promise in spades for the vast majority of its intended audience. If a Potterhead can imagine it, chances are they can probably do it in-game, from taking classes at Hogwarts to grabbing a cold one in Hogsmeade or even learning the three Unforgivable Curses. But it’s in those three spells that the series is faced with an interesting crossroads.

The Unforgivable Curses represent some of the most evil parts of theHarry Potterfranchise. They canonically can’t just be used by anyone, the caster has to have actual malice in their hearts to make them come out right. Obviously, they’re inHogwarts Legacy, and they’re a ton of fun to use, but it may sync better with the rest of the series if they don’t make a return in the next game.

Should the Unforgivable Curses Be in Hogwarts Legacy 2?

Arguments Against the Unforgivable Spells Being in the Sequel

To start off, there are a couple of ways one could argue that the most evil spells shouldn’t be in the next game.

The first and most obvious reason for nixing the Unforgivables in the next entry is that it would simply give the devs more room to include other spells from the franchise. Not every spell made it intoHogwarts Legacy, with the mostnotable exclusion being the iconic patronus charm. By taking out the Unforgivables, there may be some more room to include other more interesting spells in the next outing.

For a story that’s largely about positivity and the power of friendship, likeHogwarts Legacy, becoming a magical serial killer seems tone-deaf. Although the next game may be written in a way that allows for some darker shades of morality, the overall franchise plays like a very standard good vs evil morality tale, and the protagonist being pure evil doesn’t gel with what’s come before.

The curses were also implemented in a strange way in the original game.Dark magic inHarry Potterhas a degenerative effect on a person in lore. Much like the dark side inStar Wars, it’s an easy path to power, but it has negative effects on one’s mental, physical, and spiritual health. If there isn’t any desire to fully flesh out these spells, it may be best to drop them from the sequel.

Arguments For the Unforgivable Spells Being in the Sequel

On the flip side, there are plenty of reasons that the spells can and should come back to the next game.

A lot of gamers who have played any RPG can attest that sometimes it’s fun to roleplay as the villain. Sometimes it’s just a blast to be able toturn on a video game and be evil- the absolute worst. And if players want to do that with theirHarry Potterpower fantasy, having the Unforgivable Curses in the game is a necessity. Hopefully, the next game’s writing is handled in a way that makes evil playthroughs more believable, though.

No matter how evil the spells are, they’re iconic.Avada Kedavra is one of the most recognizable spellsfrom the franchise; it’s technically the spell that started it all when it failed to kill Harry. It’s not a completeHarry Potterexperience if they’re not present. Whether the player wants to use them or not, they’ve earned their spot.

And last, but certainly not least, there’s the fun factor. Something about shooting a blinding green beam at an enemy and removing them from the fight is so satisfying. The Unforgivables make fights very easy, but they’re on cooldowns, forcing players to keep things mixed up. They give the player a level of control that fits so well with the magical power fantasy that it would be weird to remove them in the sequel.
