The highly-anticipated balancing update forHelldivers 2is finally here, and the game’s player counts are steadily growing as fans return to the game to experiment with the new and improved buildcrafting tools. Out of all the changes introduced byHelldivers 2’s new balancing update, one weapon has stolen the spotlight - the Thermite grenade - seemingly becoming the new meta.
In the future, there may be new enemy units and mission objectives that can withstand the power of a Thermite Grenade, like the Illuminate faction that players have been antsy to encounter. For the time being though, this throwable is now one of the strongest weapons inHelldivers 2, seemingly outperforming any other throwable, support weapon, and certain orbital Stratagems in its ability to take down most enemies and objectives in a single use.
Helldivers 2’s Thermite Grenade Is the New Meta
What was previously considered to be the best grenade inHelldivers 2used to be a divisive topic. Some players preferred the utility of the Stun grenade to lock an enemy into position for a follow-up finisher, while others preferred the offensive grenades to be able to handle crowds of enemies and destroy bug holes and bot factories without expending a Stratagem. For the most part, it came down to personal preference for which one grenade was the meta pick. However, after the most recent balancing update, there’s anew meta inHelldivers 2revolving around theG-123 Thermite Grenade.
Patch Notes for Helldivers 2’s Thermite Grenade Buff (Patch 1.001.100)
Admittedly, the new maximum damage for theG-123 Thermite Grenadeis such a drastic increase that it feels like an accidental oversight, although it seems to be working as intended. For reference, this throwable now does five times the amount of damage as the throwables with the second-highest damage, currently theG-16 Impactand theG-12 High Explosivegrenades, which both deal 400 damage. At 2,000 damage, a well-placed Thermite even does more damage than some of theoffensive Stratagems inHelldivers 2, at least when it comes to a single instance of damage.
The Thermite Grenade Can Now One-Shot Most Enemies and Objectives in Helldivers 2
After the recent balancing update, theG-123 Thermite Grenadecan now kill heavily armored enemies and destroy most of the destructible objectives with one or two grenades, making it one ofthe strongest weapons inHelldivers 2. Consequently, having this weapon in the player’s loadout can open up endless possibilities for what kinds of weapons and Stratagems can be viable in high-difficulty missions.
Helldivers 2’s Thermite Grenade Makes Off-Meta Weapons Viable on Higher Difficulties
Since heavily armored enemies will appear in missions onthe highest difficulty levels inHelldivers 2, players need to bring the right weaponry to be able to consistently handle these kinds of enemies, otherwise, chances of survival aren’t good. With the newly buffed Thermite Grenades though, players who have it in their loadout can essentially bring whatever weapons and Stratagems they want into a mission and still be able to handle every type of enemy and objective.
The Thermite Grenade pairs well with any body armor that has the Engineering Kit perk inHelldivers 2, which increases the number of throwables the player can hold. Also, theB-1 Supply PackStratagem allows players to refill their grenades – as well as their ammo and stims – at any time from their backpack.
Helldivers 2’s recent balancing update buffed several weapons, expanding the variety of builds that are viable in high-difficulty content to an all-time high. However, the Thermite grenade buff takes things to a new extreme by being one of the most versatile weapons in the game, leaving players with endless options for weapons and Stratagem metas.
