Summary

According to a new report, it’s unlikely that the PS5 Pro will let players playGrand Theft Auto 6at 4K resolution and 60 frames per second. Set to launch in the fall of next year,Grand Theft Auto 6is easily one of the most highly-anticipated video games of all time. Its single trailer has broken records and left fans hungry for more information on Rockstar’s next open world epic.

Since the franchise’s very first game,Grand Theft Autohas been closely associated with the PlayStation brand. Unconfirmed reports suggest thatPlayStation has secured marketing rightsforGrand Theft Auto 6, a good indication that the relationship is continuing with the new game. With Sony having just announced the PS5 Pro, one has to imagine thatGrand Theft Auto 6will be used to push it, but it seems those hoping the new console will let them playGTA 6at 60 frames per second while maintaining the highest quality graphics may want to keep their expectations in check.

Speaking to IGN, Digital Foundry’s Richard Leadbetter stated that it is unrealistic to expectGrand Theft Auto 6to run at 60 frames per second on the PS5 pro. Leadbetter pointed out that allGrand Theft Autogames “push the CPU hard,” and so that’s why they have always launched at 30 frames per second or lower. “The PS5 Pro uses the same CPU as the PS5, and it would be extremely challenging to hit 60fps if the base PS5 is targeting 30fps. This isn’t a GPU problem, it’s a CPU problem,” Leadbetter said.

Grand Theft Auto 6 Might Not Be 60 FPS on PS5 Pro

Grand Theft Auto 6will feature a massive open worldfilled with NPCs, highly-detailed structures, animals, cutting-edge animations, and more, and so it’s really no surprise that the game may not be able to hit 60 frames per second on the PS5 Pro. That being said, the game should still look and perform better on Sony’s souped-up console, even if it probably won’t be able to deliver the dream of highest-quality graphics paired with 60 frames per second. That capability is one of the PS5 Pro’s biggest selling points, though, and so taking it out of the equation may mean consumers are less likely to buy the console forGTA 6. Based on this early analysis, it seems like a base PS5 will be more than efficient.

The question fans have to answer is whether the PS5 Pro’s upgrades are worth the price of admission. The PS5 Pro will cost $700when it launches on November 7. It’s not the most expensive PlayStation console of all time when adjusted for inflation, but it’s still a very high price, especially when it doesn’t even come with a disc drive. Still,Grand Theft Auto 6’s launch in the fall of 2025 should help sell plenty of PlayStation and Xbox consoles, including the PS5 Pro. So, even if the super-expensive console has a slow start this year, chances are it will do much better next year.
